General Discussion / bike travel and BP oil spill
« on: June 09, 2010, 04:35:14 pm »
Curious as to folks' thoughts on this.

1- Have you changed a planned bicycle trip d/t having to DRIVE or FLY to a starting location?

2- Has ACA done anything in regards to addressing their SUPPORTED and EVENTS tours seeing those tours consume a large quantity of fossil fuels to drive peoples' gear around, etc.

3- Are people boycotting BP/any other gas companies?

Anyways, just curious seeing people see and use bicycle travel for different reasons.

General Discussion / The Cookie Lady - gone?
« on: April 01, 2010, 03:57:54 pm »
so, i was on a bike ride today and went up Afton mtn (crozet, va) and intended on stopping at the Cookie Lady's house as usual to top off water bottles.

The bicycle that has always sat outside was gone, the water hose gone, the picnic table gone, the "bikers welcome" sign gone, the "cookie lady" sign gone.

in place of it all was a sign tapped across the front door stating, simply, "no trespassing, no loitering".

say what?

anybody know anything about her passing away or having to go to a nursing home and no one to keep things up?
i haven't heard/read anything in local papers and curious if anyone else has any word?

big shock to me.

was wondering if anyone has done a bike trip on the "crooked road" route in southwest virginia????
looks pretty cool, esp with it being music oriented.

here's rough map of it.

was up at yellowstone/tetons nt'l parks this weekend hiking around and the road between south entrance to yellowstone and north entrance to grand teton nt'l park is under pretty heavy construction.  road is being torn up in various places throughout this stretch with only one lane being open, and that lane being only dirt.

Routes / western express, grand canyon
« on: November 05, 2008, 07:07:51 pm »
ok....some will jump to conclusions before finishing reading these few
sentences/blurbs, but so be it...

i was thinkin of doing the western express, going eastward, and then
hoping on the grand canyon connector until i reached the southern tier
route.....BUT, will be doing it in january.  has anyone done much winter
riding/touring in this part of country, and how passable are the roads,
mainly at higher elevations...or do they just let mother nature do her
song and dance and melt the roads open come spring.

thanks.

just wondering if anyone out there has done the somewhat new Allegheny
Loop trail and/or if they used the "print at home" option or if they had
ACA print the map for them...

General Discussion / issues with snakes/scorpions-southern tier?
« on: August 05, 2008, 04:25:06 am »
just wondering if anyone out there has had any run-ins with snakes and/or scorpions while treking across the southern tier route, or anywhere out in the southwest for that matter.  wasn't sure what the best way to "deal" with these critters while camping and wasn't sure what might attract them to a campsite if at all...so yeh...any advices along those lines would be dandy.
