Routes / GAP & C&O Trails
« on: June 19, 2023, 01:56:56 pm »
Hello everyone,
I am wanting to do both trails from Pittsburg to Washington D.C. My questions are where is there a safe place to leave my car should I decide to drive down to Pittsburg then take the train to D.C. and ride back?
Second, was thinking of going around the end of July, maybe August or even September am open to riding these trails either of these months and as anyone would I would like some really nice weather.
Hope this isn't asking too much. :) :D
Any help would be very appreciated this will be my first bicycle tour but have been riding for many, many years and have been riding with the bags on the bike.

Routes / Atlantic Coast
« on: August 11, 2021, 09:47:24 am »
 :)Hello everyone,
I would like to do the Atlantic Coast Route from Bar Harbor ME. to Key West Florida next year. I will be 72 years young in 2022
This will be my first long distance tour and I am ready for it. Have a 2008 Fuji touring bike and Ortlieb Panniers front and back.
I would like help from anyone about this tour?
Should I go north to south or south to north which makes more sense ?
What time of year is a good time to start?
Also my biggest question is can I use my hammock I don't like sleeping on the ground and in a tent .
I am having a new and custom hammock made as we speak.
My last Thru-Hike of the A.T. I used a hammock all the way to Maine.
So as you can see any information is much needed and welcomed and I do appreciate your time and help.
Thanks

New England / FYI New Cell Phone Law
« on: July 19, 2012, 08:53:47 am »
Thought everyone would be interested in this new law here in New Jersey.

Tougher driver cellphone rules signed into law

(07/19/12)TRENTON - It's now easier forNew Jersey prosecutors to obtain convictions on vehicular homicide or assault by auto charges when drivers kill or injure someone while using a cellphone.

The measure was signed into law yesterday by Acting Gov. Kim Guadagno, just weeks after it was passed in the state Legislature.

The law classifies the illegal use of a hand-held cellphone as driving recklessly, one of the factors needed in finding a person guilty of vehicular homicide or assault by auto.

Proponents had argued the measure was needed because it was difficult to hold drivers criminally accountable when they kill or injure someone while using a cellphone.

Gear Talk / Rear Rack Bicycle
« on: October 05, 2010, 05:19:34 pm »
Hello, :)
I just emailed Fuji and ask about the rear rack that came with my 2008 Fuji bicycle as far as how much weight the rack was rated at and I must say I got a fast reply from them. Here is a copy and paste from them:
The stock rack on the Touring model is rated at 35 lbs.
So my question is will this rear rack be enough for me to use along with a front rack for self contained touring?
I realize it would be determined by how much weight would I will be taking and I can only answer that saying I have all my backpacking gear from hiking the Appalachian Trail and never carried more them 38 pounds and that was with 5 1/2 days of food,2 liters of water and fuel for cooking.

So I hope this makes some kind of sense and thank you for your time. :)

Gear Talk / all weight in the rear ?
« on: May 24, 2010, 09:46:51 am »
Hi everyone, :)
I have search the forums for this subject and can't seem to find what I am looking for.
Please forgive me if it is listed and I didn't find it. I have a 2008 Fuji touring bike and have just bought the Ortileb  Back-Roller Classic pair and wanted to know if it's OK just to run all the weight in the back and not run front rack and Pannier's ? I will run no more then around 35 to 40 pounds total for touring and just wanted to go with the back rack and set of Pannier's and rack bag.
I run Bontrager Race Lite Hardcase front and back and love them 700x32 and also have had custom wheels made the Mavic A-719 so is this doable can I get away with this set up ?
Than you all for your help and suggestions it is very much appreciated.

Gear Talk / Lone Peak Pannier Question
« on: May 10, 2010, 05:22:12 pm »
I was looking at the Lone Peak Parley's Summit Pannier at 2000 cui and was wondering if anyone has used these Pannier's for touring ? http://www.lonepeakpacks.com/
How do the Pannier's hold up and could I use these for both front and back Pannier's to give me a total of 4000 cui. of carrying space ?
I have a 2008 Fuji touring bike and I am looking to start touring this year.
First Tour 284 miles then the next tour will be app. 590 miles all self contained.
I also have Thur-hiked the Appalachian Trail with a 3800 cui. pack with 5 days worth of food and 2 liters of water for a combined weight of app. 33 to 38 pounds.
I know this is not hiking and bicycle touring so that is why I am asking for your help and it would be much appreciated and thank you for your time. :)
