Used this gear on Cycle Utah tour in 2006 rain/sleet/snow at 10000 plus
feet at Cedar Breaks and it performed wonderfully.

Been using a Third Eye for a couple years and won't leave home without it.
Don't have any issues with it vibrating out of place etc.

Gear Talk / Chains

Is the shop replacing it with a quality chain? I would recommend buying a chain wear tool from like Park Tools and you can check the chain yourself.

It's possible to be wearing out a chain in 1000 miles I suppose. Lots of factors like how much maintenaqnce do you do on the chain between replacement, riding on flats or lots of climbing etc. I had 1700 miles on a Shimano Ultegra chain and the LBS mech said they are only good for like 700 miles. That cost a chain and cassette. I've been using Wipperman chains for a couple years now and have good results.

Are you planning on riding the route in June with Adventure Cycling? I was in Las Vegas and decided to check this ride out before doing it.

There is a fair amount of climbing out of Zion and also out of Panguitch to Cedar City. You'll want to have plenty of time in the saddle and climbing experience.

It's going to be a awesome ride though.

Here is a schedule I got from Adventure Cycling with a couple comments included from my drive of the route)

Day 1 6/3 4pm kickoff meeting

Day 2 6/4 St. George to Springdale ( Zion ) 42.8 miles, 2100 ft of climbing

Day 3 6/5 Springdale to Hatch 61.5 miles, 4500 ft of climbing (Long climb at start of day)

Day 4 6/6 Hatch to Ruby's Inn( Bryce Canyon ) 23.2 miles, 1000 ft of climbing

Day 5 6/7 Ruby's Inn to Panguitch 22.6 miles, 300 ft of climbing (Easy Day)

Day 6 6/8 Panguitch to Cedar City 62.6 miles, 4500 ft of climbing  *toughest day (If I got the route right on my drive this tops out at 10,400 feet)

Day 7 6/9 Cedar City to St. George 61.6 miles, 700 ft of climbing

You might also try searching www.warmshowers.org for hosts willing to
put cyclists up for a night along your route.

General Discussion / Good Touring Saddle?

I'll be a second on the Brooks saddles. Though on Cycle Utah this year I was the only one with a Brooks saddle I didn't have any issues with it at all. Well broke saddle but I sure like it that way.
