Gear Talk / Anyone name their bike?
« on: October 27, 2004, 06:21:53 pm »
My Trek 520 is named 'Elway', after I bought it in Colorado and my mate reckoned it was a nice shade of 'Bronco Blue'

My Thorn Nomad has loosely been dubbed 'WAP' ... 'wing and a prayer'

My Giant tourer is unnamed as yet other than being called 'bl**dy thing' now and again ...

Gear Talk / more panniers vs BOB, rider weight an issue???
« on: June 02, 2004, 11:36:04 pm »
Hi there ...

I have used a BoBYak quite extensively and also panniers ... both have pros and cons really ...

I have had my BobYak loaded to the hilt and it never missed a beat and it always tracked wherever I went ... I managed to pass 3 cars while riding down a  long hill towing a fully laden trailer, top speed 88.5kmh [about 55mph] with no issues other than tears in my eyes and a big smile. I also bombed down a gravel pass with no issues either ...

I think the trick is to load the heavy stuff as close the bottom of the trailer as you can and also as close to the front too ... plus you really need to finesse when steering the bike and trailer, as any sudden movements will throw you off line, so either look far ahead and plan early, or just plow over stuff!

I think it is really comes down to ones own preference ...

Oh, I am 1.91m, 105kg [6'3", 220lbs?] and tow the trailer behind and aluminium framed MTB.

cheers,
hoogie

Lightweight polyprop thermal tops [x2] ... took them with me on my South Australia tour in 2001 ... area was experiencing 30+degC heat, up to 41degC on some days ... didn't wear them, but they came in handy as a pillow at nights!

Stovetop mini espresso maker ... bought for the next tour ...

Best item I have forgotten to take with me ... camera [last two major tours!]

Yep ... Pedalled over the Great Dividing Range from Halls Gap to Dunkeld, Victoria, Australia ... it was a very hot day and was quite tired when I got to the campsite [basic but satisfactory] ... the local store was equally as basic, so bought a carton of milk, a bag of mashed potatoes and a tin of peas ... over the gas stove I mixed up a huge pot [litre] of mashed potatoes and added the tinned peas just as it was about ready ... ate this with half a loaf of bread, two bottles of powerade and a cup of coffee ... not exactly cordon bleu, but very tasty and nutritious [I think?]  :quest:
