Gear Talk / Re: liquid fuel or canister fuel stove for Southern Tier?

I've been told that this doesn't work at all post offices.  They recommend you check with them before you mail anything.  They have an 800 number (800-275-8777).

Routes / Re: Milwaukee, WI to Portland, OR starting now (mid August)

Actually, the weather in Portland OR is usually quite nice in October.  The summer dry spell typically doesn't start to decay until about the middle of October.  It sounds like you will be there by then.

I concur with rvckassen's advice about the rest of the trip.  You might possibly encounter snow in the higher passes, but it won't stick around.  Just be prepared to wait out any periods of bad weather.

One recommendation I would make is to pick up the free map of CA's campsites.
What map specifically are you thinking of, and where is it available?

Routes / Re: Alternative Routes to Blue Ridge Parkway in VA and NC

The Blue Ridge Parkway is beautiful.  Traffic is mostly fairly light, and (commercial) trucks are prohibited.  I would definitely recommend it over other roads.  Much easier to navigate too, as it is one continuous road.  Although there are long grades in many places, most are not extremely steep (IMO; I don't know your level of fitness).  I believe elevation profiles are posted online - don't have a link though.  You can check yourself by making a route on Gmap Pedometer http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/ which will create an elevation profile for you.

But not the spring?  If there's any chance you'd consider offering it, it would get my vote.

I did a trip like this in the other direction a few years ago.  From Eureka CA, followed 299 and then 96 to Yreka.  Very pleasant, not much traffic.  About 5 miles of Interstate 5 (not too pleasant, but only 5 miles).  Then followed minor roads, a lot of which was unpaved, to 66 just west of Klamath Falls.  No traffic at all on most of it.  I mean zero.  Looking at Google maps, I believe what I followed was Copco Rd/Iron Gate Lake Road (which was paved and had a number of campgrounds) and then Ager Bestwick Rd (which was not paved) which became Topsy Grade Rd to it's junction with 66.

Routes / Southern Tier Self-contained ACA trip spring 2011??
« on: July 16, 2010, 12:44:40 pm »
Anyone know if ACA will be offering a spring self-contained Southern Tier trip next spring (2011)?  It appears from what I can find they didn't this year.
