I am new to using a gps for bike navigation and I am still attempting to figure out how to use ACA waypoints with my Garmin receiver.  I have printed the information that you have on the web, but it is new to me and somewhat confusing.

My hope is that I will be able to ride the Atlantic Coast route in 2013, and I want to use both a gps and the maps, which I have already purchased from ACA.  But first, I have to figure the gps waypoint system out.

Gear Talk / Re: Camping Tent

Buy the discontinued Sierra Designs Hyperlite AST 2 man tent from REI-Outlet at a deep discount.  Buy the footprint too.  This tent is awesome.  No complaints after 180 days of bicyle touring.

I have used the Sierra Designs Hyperlite on several bike trips and it has been a very good tent.  Plenty of interior space for your clothing and equipment, dry in rain storms, and no condendsation problems.  For the space and features, it is light weight.

General Discussion / Re: biking across america with diabetes

I am a type 2 diabetic and while I have not had the opportunity to ride cross country, I do go on multiday tours, up to a week in length.  I also particpate in many one day local club rides.  I consulted a diabetic nurse/nutritionist recently and asked her about diet, sport drinks, and energy or food bars as a way to maintain proper nutrition levels during the time I am riding.  I brought some of the products with me so that she could read the content information.  These included Clif Bars, Gatorade, and Cytomate.  She recommended the use of those and similiar products as a way to stay "fueled" during the ride, in addition to eating regulare meals.  It was explained to me that a diabetic does not replace glycogen and other needed body system fuels the way a non diabtic does and that we burn them out of our body faster, and that these supplements are good to use, as long as you are careful not to overload on the carbs that they contain.  She recommended eating small amounts at frequent intervals.  I think that this would be more critical to balance for a type 1 than a type 2.

General Discussion / Re: cardiac pacemakers and touring

My condition is different and maybe not as serious.  I am now 68 years old.  One year ago, I had three arterial cardiac stints "installed".  Prior to having this procedure, I was getting winded very easily, and had to leave a tour after three days.  Since then I have greater indurance and I have biked 60 and 70 mile days on tour with a full gear load, and have completed several tours.
