I have used gatoraid, I mix brewed greentea and gatoraid, half and half, and that mixture is mixed with an equal amount of water.  I also pack sandwiches made of whole grain bread w/ peanut butter, honey bananas and cinnamon. However, I have since dropped the gatoraid and added a bit of salt.

The saddle rides fine, just looks rough.  Mine was treated on the underside with sno-seal and proofhide but they seemed to be able to modify it just fine, it does'nt look like the underside leather they applied is likely to come loose.  I have never posted a picture on line and am unsure how to do it.  I'll wait unktil my grandkids come over and they can undoubtedly dot in a 'flash'.

Today I recieved the saddle back in the mail. It's rough! looks bad! Had I a pattern I'd have done it myself.
Hopefully, it will ride better than it looks. Tomorrow I will put 50-60 miles on it and see.

Though I have perused the brooks site, I have not discovered that they modify saddles.  They do sell saddles with the slot already cut in them.  I should e-mail them and see if they will take a saddle and modify it.  The company I am thinking of will modify a saddle, cut the slot and reinforce the leather, for $45.00.

There is a company that modifies Brooks saddles by cutting a hole lengthwise in the saddle under ones perinium.
I am interested in checking into this to see if this would relieve the soreness I get after 60 miles or so.
If anybody can give me an internet site or address I would appreciate it.

This bike , and your description makes my mouth water. Just my size too! However, after open heart surgery I am financially unable to aquire her.  If you could post some pictures on this site, I'm sure ther is someone out there willing and able to adopt her.

The Bianchi Volpe has eyelets on the front fork and rear.  The chainstays are 425 mm long. Go to crazyguyonabike.com, look up Bianchi an you will find that Bianchi Volpes that have made trans-America trips and at least one went completely around the perimiter.

I think I will wait before I get a trainer, (rollers are out). It seems no one I talk to who have tariners use them much after having them for very long.  I'll ride in the cold, even on snow, but I draw the line on freezing rain. Maybe i'll get a trainer after a few weeks of winter and then again I may not.  Cold weather riding is not too bad if I don't over do it and have to suck cold, lung burning(?) air.

Rollers or a trainer?  After purchasing a Volpe this last May I've ridden 1,600+ miles and would like to continue to use the bike during the worst of the winter days. Being unfamilier with either of the above I thought I'd ask people who have used them.

I'm definately looking at the Volpe.  Trouble is, the list of dealers close to me contains two dealers who no longer sell Bianchi and a third tried to sell me a Soma.  It looks like I'll to drive nearly 100 miles just to see one. The Jamis seems to be geared too high, and, again no local dealers.  There is a local Fuji dealer, did'nt like the bike. The Novara?... 192 miles to the nearest REI store.  I can get a Surly locally but none available to test ride, I'd have to buy it and hope I'd like it.

Surly makes a complete bike for $940 now. the Randonee can be had for $949 and REI now offers a 20% discount but I have to drive 193 miles one way to get it. The Volpe is $899 retail and available within 40 miles of my home.  I don"t know what kind of deal I can get on either the Surly LHT or the Volpe.  The Randonee weighs 29 lbs, the Surly 27 lbs, and I don't know what the volpe weighs.  The Volpe seems to be more of a cross type bike and is geared higher than touring bikes, seems to be a light tour/road bike.

Bianchi Volpe, Novara Randonee, and the Surly Long Hual Trucker are my current considerations.  I intend to use the bike for commuting and randoneuring. I like the idea of self supported weekend or even weeklong trips.  Sizing is confusing, I'm currently riding a bike with a stand over of 35 and 3/4 inches (90.8 mm). It's tight, though I can just flex my knees, I bought this Puch ten speed at a flea market just to have something to ride after a 35 year hiatus.
