General Discussion / Free Camping in Europe??
« on: April 09, 2011, 10:08:58 am »
Hi,
We're finishing up our cross country trip of the US and are flying to Europe in April
Has anyone found good success with free camping there?
The U.S. has been a piece of cake: public land, parks, churches (lots of them!), firehouses.
Any hints for Europe would be great.
Thanks

General Discussion / touring shop in washington DC
« on: March 12, 2011, 03:41:45 pm »
Hi,
I'm looking for a bike store in either washington Dc or even better, in bethesda, MD that knows and understands touring bicycles/needs.
We're finishing up a coast to coast ride and then will fly to portugal to ride across europe.  We'd like a tune up/thorough going through before we cross the atlantic.
Thanks for the info.

General Discussion / Brooks saddle: keeping it dry
« on: January 11, 2011, 01:00:23 pm »
Hi,
So do I really need to be worried about keeping my (new) brooks saddle dry?
Heading out on a 9+ month tour.  I can't imagine being paranoid about a saddle
during long days of rain, stopping for breaks, at night etc.
I treated it with the wax they provide, but do I have to cover it?

What do you think?

General Discussion / Camp Shoe ideas????
« on: January 06, 2011, 06:38:27 pm »
I've got all my gear figured out and strealined except for camp/off the bike shoes.
Right now I've got running shoes (racing flats), but boy do they take up a lot of room.
We definitely walk around when not on the bike, so flip flops won't do.
Size/volume is more important than weight.
Any ideas anyone????

Routes / Re: Route 20 in Cascades, WA

Colonial Creek Campground, east of newhalem is great.
Further along, almost to rainy pass there's a great camping spot.  It is located just down the trail from the "Easy Pass" trailhead.
Not an offcial camping spot, but it's on the river and right off the road (and conveniently located).
(Just google easy pass to find it).  There's an outhouse in the parking lot.  To get to the camp spot, just walk down the trail maybe 1/8th of a mile, it's located just off the trail next to the creek.  And if you're looking for a day hike during your ride, leaveing your tent set up and hiking to the top of easy pass (not easy, but pretty short) is amazing.
The next good camping spot isn't until you are 2 to 3 miles west of the hamlet of mazama, early winters campground.
Good luck!

General Discussion / Re: Shrink wrapping your bike for flights
« on: October 30, 2010, 09:59:43 pm »
Two Questions:

Where do you get the shrink wrap? (OK, picture us riding into washington dc, or faro portugal)
Do you wrap the ENTIRE bike, including the tires, or do you let it still roll like a bicycle?
Any pictures anyone of successful shrink wrapping?

Thanks

Routes / riding from san diego east: hwy 94
« on: October 29, 2010, 03:41:53 pm »
Has anyone ridden highway 94 from san diego south east towards campo?  If so: how's the traffic vs. the interstate 8 corridor?
Apparently this used to be the southern tier route.  Being alongside I-8 seems just miserable to me and I was thinking of this as an alternate route.

Thanks for the help

Routes / getting out of san diego, not on the interstate
« on: October 25, 2010, 12:02:18 am »
Hi,
Anyone ever ride rt 94 south from san diego towards Campo instead of all the interstate stuff that Adventure cycling sends you on?  From the maps it looks like a better route.
Thanks
