Gear Talk / rear cassette
« on: August 27, 2005, 07:07:01 pm »
I'm planning a southern tier adventure mid October (w to e). What experiences have you had removing the rear cassette? Is there a suggestion on how to do it "on the road" wihout bringing along a large wrench for holding down the cassette. I managed to rig something in my basement, but not sure if this will be possible in the middle of nowhere.
Thanks,
Pam

Gear Talk / pannier advice

Regarding waterproof panniers--I've always found that lining the panniers w/ a plastic bag (heavy duty) works like a charm. I've been doing it for about 20 years. However, I've just purchased rain covers (maybe a month ago) so we'll see how that goes!

Tell me about mini speakers, how much do they weigh and can an MP3 player be plugged in.
Thanx,
Pam

Routes / southern tier

Mike-
I started to do some research, but had to actually attend to my real job. Will finish over the weekend.
But concerning Florida, where are you bking? We went from Jacksonviile to Orlando (we actually planned to go all the way to Ft. Myers, but had to leave early) this past December. We used the AC maps exclusively. Let me know if I can share anything or there is any overlap with your planned jourey.

Thanks Mike. I am familiar with your book (not the content, but the title!). It hadn't occurred to me that part of your journey might be the segment i am interested in. I'll buy your book (shameless plugs work!) Also thanks for the Disney-to-Disney tip.

one more question! Does anyone know of a book chronicling the southern tier ride in the US-- a sort of companion to adventure cycling maps? I know there are a few for trans-am and great divide, but i haven't come across a "personal account" book for southern.
Thanx,
Pam

General Discussion / Establish website or not?
« on: August 25, 2005, 06:24:47 pm »
Now you have me thinking about just doing the electronic notes and photos. I really wasn't thinking of the website for storage, just so that friends and family could occasionally "check in." But maybe I'm better off sending e-mails (w/ or w/o pix) as the occasions arise.

I did read crazyguyonabike 's book. It did look like he had an awful lot of electronics with him. What do you carry? And when are you planning on leaving San Diego?

General Discussion / Establish website or not?

My husband and I plan on doing the southern tier (w to e) starting in October. I plan on taking lots of photos and writing a journal (have figured out all that technology). But since we'll be gone for a few months I'd like to keep in touch with friends/family--more than the occasional phonecall or e-mail.
Is it worth setting up a website to keep folks posted of progress with photos? I have a cell phone, palm pilot with folding keyboard and a very small digital camera. I suppose there will be internet cafes available every week or so. What's been your experience and how do I go about this?
Thanks,
Pam
