Gear Talk / Kick stands
« on: March 14, 2006, 01:36:31 pm »
KS are heavy, and they are far from essential so I would hold off until you are completely sure you can't live another day without them.

On the other hand I bought a very expensive recumbent bike a few years back, and it came with a kickstand built in.  There was a welded on bracket that carried a nice quality stand, and given the way the bike would lie on it's components, and how awkward it was to pick up with low bars under the seat, it was a nearly essential piece of gear.  I'm building a custom touring frame, and I am going to give a KS weld-on bracket some serious thought.

Gear Talk / Convert 8-speed to 9-speed?

For touring a lot of folks, the consensus I would have thought, prefer 8 speed to 9 speed, with some prefering 7 speed.

Gear Talk / Fenders

Comuting, trail riding, touring?

You can end up riding in the rain for days on a tour.  With full fender, I just didn't notice any problems. When it was bright and lovely they didn't seem to be slowing me down or getting caught on stuff, when it was wet, no water reached me.  Cool wise I think there is a change underway.  When we got hte first racing bikes, they were cool because they didn't have fenders, folks riding them were in the know while others weren't.  These days the snobery is running the other way with the insiders understanding the long forgoten details of all weather biking.  It's because the other guys don't get it that it is cool.  Of course it helps to have nice fenders.

Gear Talk / Schwalbe

I did a 1000 mile tour on them last fall, I hit a rock on a rail trail, noticeable, but it did no damage to anything else, no flat, the tire casing split, almost ended my tour.  I really like these tires, and replaced the broken one, but I will for sure carry a folding spare if I can find one.  I normally would carry a folding spare, just couldn't find one before I left on that trip.
