Gear Talk / Hybrid bike suggestions-looking for advice
« on: April 29, 2006, 10:30:59 pm »
I have to echo alfonso here. I began riding just a year ago and started with a moderately-priced hybrid. I only ride on roads, however.

A year later--once I realized I was hooked--I bought a road bike, but the hybrid served its purpose of letting me decide if riding was for me without breaking the bank.

Gear Talk / Communications during ride
« on: April 29, 2006, 10:35:33 pm »
When I first got into cycling, I rode with a former special forces guy who used to enjoy my pain.

HIM: Hey, look at the columns on that house.
ME: What house?
HIM: That one, right up on that hill.
ME: All I see is that $^*^# hill. I'm not looking up!

Routes / Atlantic Coast route--headwind question
« on: April 29, 2006, 10:19:03 pm »
Last week I did a quick jaunt, heading south, on the Outer Banks in NC. First day, there was a terrific tailwind. The second day it was dead into my face. The third day, at my back again. No unusual storms or weather patterns. Just variable winds. Toss a coin?

Routes / Cycling in Lexington, KY
« on: April 29, 2006, 10:07:39 pm »
I have to echo those here who have said that Lexington isn't the best location for commuting by bike. I lived there for five years (before I began cycling, incidentally), and the area is actually fairly congested, despite its being a relatively small city.

The rural roads might give you some decent riding, but I would think commuting will be frustrating, although not impossible.
