The Trek Across Maine will be held June 15-17, 2007. This event has been run by The American Lung Association-Maine since 1985. It is an exceptionally well organized Charity Ride. This year is looking at about 2000 participants. Check it out at Mainelung.org

Bike Clubs / Getting your club more involved in touring
« on: March 14, 2007, 03:11:35 pm »
Very good question. We have an active club and have club rides on Tu,Wed.,Th, and Sun. Sun is usually 50mi or a metric century. The club members for the most part ride racing machines made of Carbon,Titanium,Aluminum-Carbon. Those who also have steel bikes use them for winter and bad weather riding. We have a couple of older riders who have gone cross country. Agewise, there are only about four of us who are 65+ years old--and we are the ones who like distance riding. The bike I ride is an Aluminum-Carbon racer. For light touring, I have an older Miyata Cross 100 with 700x36C tyres and bar-end shifters. I will poll the club to see if anybody would be interested in doing a tour. I do know that there are races scheduled for almost every weekend this summer.

Club members and the two bike shops ( Belfast Bicycles, and Birgfeld`s in Searsport ) are knowledgeable and a good resource for tourists. Individual members are also available. Contact Belfastbicycleclub.org It is a good website for repair tips as well.

Bike Clubs / Welcome!
« on: March 26, 2007, 11:29:12 am »
Thanks for bringing up the topic. As cycle tourists, it would certainly be helpful to have a network of tour-bike friendly clubs and shops available to us. The internet makes this all easier. Contacting Belfastbicycleclub.org and clicking Links will give the tourist a wealth of information. Mike, the owner of Belfast Bicycles (207) 338-0008 is always a great help. I can also be reached at (207)338-3105. Ask for Alex.

Cape, When in Maine, get in touch. We have some great loops here. Just turned 65 and can still keep up with the younger groups. Winslow is not that far from Belfast. Have ridden there a few times.

Urban Cycling / why bike?

My shop is in Belfast, ME. It is not a commercial enterprise--strictly hobby. I used to be a motorcycle mechanic many years ago. Since we moved ashore two years ago, I decided to set up a shop and get the right tools. Instead of buying an expensive bike, I decided to invest in  tools--Park and Craftsman love me. Also spent a lot of time learning from my local bike shop. Am now rebuilding 24 mountain bikes for our 4H Camp. The bike shop supplies the parts at cost and I do the labor as a volunteer--and the kids have safe bikes--everybody wins. Plan to teach a course in preventative maintenance to the kids this summer so they can do their own bikes. Our club members also use the shop to tune up their bikes.

I started riding in 2004 when I was diagnosed with cancer. I lost 50 lbs. and went into surgery strong as an ox. I got thoroughly hooked, now have three bikes that I have built, and have a state of art bike shop. I dont have cancer anymore.

Urban Cycling / what bike do you use for pure urban ridin'?

Doug, When we lived and cruised on our sailboat, my wife and I had Dahon folders made of stainless steel with 16" wheels and SA 3Sp hubs. We still have them after 16 years and they are still in great shape. When we go cruising again we will probably get something more modern like the Helios.

Ptaylor, I really like the pedals. They are great in town, especially where there are a lot of lights. I also like the fact that if you need to run to the store for some bread or milk, you just jump on the bike and go--no need for biking shoes, etc. I recall that they were not expensive--made by Shimano and of good quality. The bearings are servicable.

I ride a lugged Miyata 100 Cross with Planet Bike fenders, luggage rack with topper, Nashbar panniers, and lights. I changed the downtube shifters to bar-ends. The wheels are American Wheelsmith with Shimano 600 hubs. I have platform pedals on one side and SPD on the other. It`s an older bike but is in mint condition. I just put on some 38C tires.

Urban Cycling / top bicycle-friendly cities and towns
« on: November 21, 2006, 04:04:00 pm »
Belfast,Maine is on the way toward being very bike friendly. The two main thorougfares now have bike lanes. Our local bicycle shop bends over backwards to help people. Belfast Bicycle Club is very active--three group rides a week and an active time trial schedule. The club also does bike safety rodeos for kids. and our police department registers bikes for 25 cents to cover filing and the cost of a numbered decal. The snowfall is very light here on the coast so we ride pretty well year round. All the fat tired steel bikes come out around this time.
