Tickets are now on sale for the 10th Annual Ciclismo Classico Bike Travel Film Festival. It's the only festival in the USA to focus solely on bicycle adventures, and all proceeds go to Adventure Cycling!

This year the Arlington, MA, festival will be on March 20th, the first night of SPRING!

Come join a packed house at the Regent Theatre Arlington for a night of adventure films. You don't have to be a cyclist to enjoy these tales of explorers aged 5 to 75 enjoying the world and the outdoors!  It's definitely an event to bring the bike-curious friends and family in your life.

Plus, as always we'll have live music, the Cookie Showcase (cookies - and hamentashen - from a dozen beloved local bakeries), and the chance to win great prizes including a bicycle trip to Italy! All proceeds go to Adventure Cycling Association.

Have you heard of Cycle Massachusetts?

We’re proud to celebrate 10 years as the Friendliest Ride in the East (we used to be the Mass BikePike Tour), and we’re delighted to welcome cyclists for a weekend or a whole week depending on their schedules.  We have some great new features in 2016:

*Cycle Club Discount – 6 or more riders registering from your club will receive a discounted entry fee: contact Bruce@cyclema.com for more details
*One ride – four states!  Not only do we explore Massachusetts, but we’ll ride the quiet roads of Rhode Island, Connecticut, and New York as well.
*Family riding weekend! Our opening weekend is especially family-friendly, complete with shorter rides to kid-approved destinations, an ice cream social, and an all-ages outdoor movie!
*Back to the Berkshires! We’ll explore the quiet roads of this legendary region.  We even have an “Alice’s Restaurant” ride to celebrate the scenes of this famous song.

We’re excited to welcome riders to our fantastic start/finish location at Nichols College in Dudley, Massachusetts.  With two nights on their lovely campus, two nights in the cultural mecca of Great Barrington, and a night each in East Longmeadow and Suffield, CT, you’ll have time to explore the most scenic vistas, visit local landmarks, and savor each experience with new friends.
Cycle Massachusetts is from July 30th through August 5th (2, 4, 5, and 7 day options available) and all proceeds support the Massachusetts Bicycle Coalition.  Sign up today at http://www.cyclema.com: The registration deadline is July 15th, and Cycle Massachusetts is limited to 150 riders!

I am the Festival Director for the 7th Annual Ciclismo Classico Bike Travel Film Festival.  We're very excited for our 2016 edition, where we partner more formally with Adventure Cycling Association in honor of their 40th birthday, and we'll be welcoming Jim Sayer to Massachusetts for one of our festival dates!

We invite all cyclists who love to explore and film to submit for consideration films ranging from 3 to 60 minutes. It’s a good activity for those cold winter months!

Films must feature bicycle travel of any type: organized tour or informal travel, domestic or international.  One of our best-received films from previous festivals involved an epic journey from Marblehead to Swampscott (i.e. a 10 mile ride) – so we are not only seeking the “quit-your-job” sort of epics!  In fact, we have a NEW "Weekender Prize" for the best film of a journey lasting under 48 hours!

Please see http://www.ciclismoclassico.com/filmfest for more info.  We love having fresh voices in the festival, especially since we will be expanding to additional theatres (Arlington MA; North Shore of Massachusetts; Danbury, CT!) in 2016.

Thanks and have an adventurous 2016!

(When you start and finish in Northampton, there's multiple chances to enjoy Herrell's, a pioneer of ice cream if there ever was one!)

After 8 years of guiding hundreds of bicyclists through the best of the Bay State, the Mass BikePike Tour is now Cycle Massachusetts!

The name may have changed, but we’re still proud to be the Friendliest Ride in the East.  For today’s busy cyclist, we’re all about the options:

•    Choose to join us for a weekend, 4 days, 5 days, or a whole week!

•    Choose a special challenge ride (Berkshire foothills century, epic Quabbin Reservoir tour) or enjoy the convenience of our Head Start Drop-off Service – all levels of cyclists are applauded!

•    Choose ice cream on the road, or smores at our nightly campfire (or both!)

We’ve identified three picturesque and unique Massachusetts destinations: colorful Northampton, quaint Hardwick (at the unbelievable Eagle Hill School), and the exquisite Stoneleigh-Burnham School in Greenfield.  With two nights at each, you’ll have time to explore the most scenic vistas, visit local landmarks, and savor each experience with new friends.

Cycle Massachusetts is from August 1 through 7, 2015 (2, 4, 5, and 7 day options available) and all proceeds support the Massachusetts Bicycle CoalitionSign up today: the tour is limited to 150 riders!

General Discussion / Please share your bicycle travel films!
« on: January 22, 2015, 03:12:06 pm »
The 6th Annual Ciclismo Classico Bike Travel Film Festival invites YOU to submit your bicycle travel film ranging from 3 to 60 minutes. We have a very friendly relationship with the Adventure Cycling video contest and work together with them whenever possible.  (Our guidelines allow for longer films so if you've been unable to submit there, we might be a good fit.)

Films must feature bicycle travel of any type: organized tour or informal travel, domestic or international. One of our best-received films involved an "epic" 12 mile journey not far from home – so you don’t have to jump on a plane to get a great film.

In addition to the Grand Jury prize and the Audience Award, we'll have the Bay State prize, for the best film submitted by a Massachusetts resident. This award will include some first-class Massachusetts goodies! There's also an "Alumni" category if you have been on a Ciclismo Classico Tour.

SUBMISSION DEADLINE is March 15, 2015
Submission regulations, where to send and more info is available at http://www.ciclismoclassico.com/filmfest
Filmmakers will be notified of Selection Committee’s decision by April 1st.

Cycling Events / Explore small-town Massachusetts this summer!
« on: February 18, 2014, 02:06:12 pm »
(here in Massachusetts, we're on our 3rd storm in 6 days and there's nothing nicer than thinking about relaxed summer touring)

Give us two vacation days – and we’ll give you a Massachusetts bicycle adventure!
What do you think of when you go for a ride? What do you think of when looking for a tour? We think it’s more than just going from point A to point B. We think it’s about scenic, well-marked routes through quaint New England towns, farms and forests, lakes and rivers. We think it’s also about lingering at lunch, eating ice cream, making new friends, taking a plunge into a pond, buying fruit from a farm, watching a sunset, pedaling at your own pace, climbing a mountain if you want, recharging, and chasing a dream. Welcome to the Mass BikePike Tour, a four-day event that celebrates cycling in Massachusetts.

With experience dating back to 2007, we are dedicated to differentiating ourselves from other tours. Over the years, we have fine-tuned the details and are proud to call ourselves “The Friendliest Ride in the East”.

This year we’ll start and end in Shirley, MA, and you’ll be amazed at the quiet paradise just an hour’s drive from Boston. Visit the apple country and 18th century utopia of Harvard, savor the all-day breakfast at old-fashioned classic diner in Oxford, or try to pick which town green is the most beautiful – our vote is for West Brookfield. Along with the beautiful scenery, you can look forward to the climb to the top of Purgatory Chasm. Beer-lovers will enjoy the chance to ride by the monastery that is the first and only certified Trappist Beer brewery in the United States!

Each evening features a pre-dinner “social hour”, a nightly campfire/stargazing, and optional field trips to local attractions. The Mass BikePike Tour is affordably priced – just over $400 if you sign up before March! – and proceeds go to Massbike. There are some volunteer opportunities that will allow you to join us for free. For more information please visit www.massbikepike.org.

If there wasn’t enough reason to make a travel video for the Adventure Cycling Bike Travel Video contest…how about having your video on the big screen?

The 5th Annual Ciclismo Classico Bike Travel Film Festival is now accepting submissions for its 2014 edition!  It is the only film festival in the USA that focuses specifically on bicycle travel.  It will take place May 28th, 2014 at the Regent Theatre in Arlington, MA, U.S.A.  For the second year, we’re working with Adventure Cycling to showcase the joy of bicycle travel, whether it’s around the world or to the next town. Last year, one of the crowd favorites followed a 10-mile rail trail journey full of mishaps - so you don't have to get on a plane to have an adventure!

We encourage people to submit directly to us, though we’ll also be working together with Adventure Cycling to select additional videos that fit our festival’s mission.

For more information on the Festival, please visit www.ciclismoclassico.com/filmfest. The event is a benefit for Massbike.

The Festival welcomes submissions from professional and amateur filmmakers. Films should be between 3-60 minutes and should feature bicycle travel of any type. As you can see, our maximum length is much longer than the Adventure Cycling contest, so if you have a somewhat longer film, please send it our way!

New England / Ciclismo Classico Bike Travel Film Festival - May 20th!
« on: April 29, 2013, 05:26:23 pm »
Hi Adventure Cycling friends

May is National Bike Month, and I’m inviting you to the most inspirational event of the month – the 4th Annual Ciclismo Classico Bike Travel Film Festival on May 20th at the Regent Theatre in Arlington. It’s a benefit for Massbike.

It is the only film festival in the USA that will make you want to drop everything and ride off into the sunset (or at least head away for a weekend). This year, our Grand Jury Prize winner is a fascinating story of a 23-year old Boston mother of three who cycled the globe in just 15 months – in 1894!

In addition to this seriously “old-school” tour, we’ll see more recent explorations with destinations from Iran to Scotland to…Swampscott!

We'll also be featuring the winners of the Adventure Cycling Bike Travel Video Contest on the big screen where they belong :)

We are also the only film festival to feature a Cookie Showcase of the area’s best bakeries - which is what happens when event planners have a sweet tooth.

One lucky attendee will win an amazing door prize – a spot on one of Ciclismo Classico’s “More Miles for Less” tours – a $2600 value!  We’ll also be raffling off an eclectic collection of cool bike jerseys to outfit you for your next ride.  Hope to see you there!

New England / Re: Bicycle friendly place to stay in Boston
« on: April 29, 2013, 05:23:00 pm »
The new Boston Hostel has a good amount of storage space and is easy to get to from the airport or train/bus station.  They have storage space.  They also have really nice private rooms and are in a fantastic location - close to everything.  It just opened last year so if you are picturing saggy mattresses and leaky bathrooms, you'd be very wrong :)

It's at www.bostonhostel.org iirc.

I am a longtime ACA member and I work on the Mass BikePike Tour, an annual bike tour celebrating our state and raising money for Massbike.  (we are their #1 donor the past few years).
This past summer I actually got to work at the event, and I truly fell in love - it offered a great mix of super riding that was as challenging as you'd wish, the friendliest riders, and just a wonderful "summer vacation" vibe.  I hope you'll join me at the 2013 edition - the early bird discount ends at the end of the month, and the ride will sell out, so sign up asap.  Here's more information below:

Give us two vacation days – and we’ll give you a Massachusetts bicycle adventure!

The Mass BikePike Tour is a scenic bicycle tour celebrating all the best that Massachusetts has to offer!  Taking place from August 1st to 4th, it is “The Friendliest Ride in the East” and is suitable for novice to experienced cyclists. If you live nearby, it's a GREAT use of limited vacation time - join us after work on Wednesday and we’ll enjoy the next four days of exploring on two wheels. You’ll return home Sunday afternoon with new friends and fun memories.

2013’s ride features the rolling hills and picturesque towns of north-central Massachusetts, from the Johnny Appleseed Trail to the Connecticut River Valley. The ride will also head north into Keene, NH, and (long ride only) Brattleboro, VT.

The Mass BikePike Tour offers two routes each day. The shorter route is between 25 and 45 miles and the longer route is between 45 and 70 miles.

Each evening features a pre-dinner “social hour”, and optional nightly field trips to local attractions. The Mass BikePike Tour is affordably priced – less than $400 if you sign up before March! – and proceeds go to the MassBike Coalition.  There are some volunteer options that allow you join us for free. For more information please visit www.massbikepike.org.

I have done many short tours on my mountain bike!  Definitely for a starter tour I would consider some of the areas near the Delaware River.  It's just lovely; I particularly love the area just north of Delaware Water Gap.

Whether across the globe or a few towns away, there’s nothing that recharges and expands horizons like bicycle travel.  The Festival will increase awareness and appreciation for bicycle travel by showcasing independent films that depict the adventure, humor, and growth that happens on a two-wheeled journey.  We seek films that portray a broad range of experiences – destinations ranging from small Italian hamlets to a campground 30 miles from home; solo travel or a family reunion on bicycles; an organized tour from inn to inn or a shoestring jaunt with tent and sleeping bag.
