Hi Jeff,

You are certainly welcome to join me if you want to.  There is a cycling club of recreational riders in San Antonio.  I could figure out the name if you want.

I am going to tour the Texas Hill Country in March 2008.  I plan on going about 300 miles over 14 days of leisurely riding.  Some campgrounds, some free camping, occassional motel if soaked.  Some cooking and some restaurants.  Would like one or more traveling companions.  If interested contact Lee Stork at spartanstorkbird@excite.com.

Gear Talk / Wreck with trailer?

Hi JimF,

The trailer was not a Bob, but a Bob clone.  It is made by Yakama and is the one currently on sale for $139 at Performance and Nashbar.

I loaded it pretty good.  All seemed to be fine.  I went down a hill that I take every day.  Usually I just let the bike go down the hill and go about 25 miles per hour top.  This day I picked up speed like crazy.  I hit about 25 in the first third of the downhill.  The bike started  to lean to the left at about 10mph.  The a right lean but larger.  Then a still larger left lean, followed by a still larger right lean of perhaps  25 degrees.  Then a very big left lean where I thought you are in big trouble.  This was followed by a right lean into the pavement at 25 miles per hour with a direct hit on the right shoulder and 4 right ribs.

I called Yakama and they said they had never heard of such an occurance.  The way they made the assembly booklet with all the jokes I thought riding it was no big deal.  My shoulder will be permanently screwed up.
Thanks for the info and any more you may know of.

I bought a trailer recently.  Upon loading it up, on the first downhill I crashed breaking 4 ribs and collar bone.
Has this happened to anyone else?

General Discussion / Bicycling Stroll through the National Parks
« on: July 31, 2004, 09:38:41 pm »
I am planning a one year long bicycling stroll through the National Parks of the USA.  This stroll is aimed at newly retired senior citizens.  Mileage will be about 30 miles per day to smell any flower they want to.  An RV and a scout truck will accompany us.  The RV is so we can shower when camping for free and to keep the food and meat cold.  The scout truck is to locate our next lunch stop and for locating our evening camping spot.  We plan to 1) free camp when available 2) backcountry camp where available 3) national parks or state parks 4) commercial campgrounds.  This will be participatory camping with each person doing a task each day.  I would like comments and suggestions as to the feasibility of this plan.  Thank you. :)
