I am riding a Surly Troll....26" wheeled monster truck. I find Schwalbe Marathon 1.5's to be plenty "fast" @ 90-100 lbs.

It's not a race ;-)

I would especially check any state facilities in the Adirondaks.

If it fits with your schedule, check out the cyclist facility in Monroeville, IN.  Nice place.

It was pretty chilly at night in August. The owner lest us sleep upstairs in the barn.

Hi all,

My wife and I are headed to Maine from Chicago starting Sept 2nd. I have read that camping "might" be tougher this time of year? Do I really need to worry and call in advance?

The thing that would rule out the Jake for me is that it is aluminum vs the steel Trek. Having to clamp racks to an Aluminum bike is rarely considered a great idea. You would likely not have a problem with the geometry of the Kona as much as others think and many, many people have toured on the Bianchi Volpe for years. The Volpe is of course steel and fitted with rack and fender braze-ons.

That said you could pull a trailer and ride the Jake just fine.

Discussed at http://www.adventurecycling.org/forums/index.php?topic=6948.0 .  The majority of owners are happy with it, but a quite signifficant number have had very serious shimmy problems.

Thanks whittierider...pretty sure I have seen that, and I do know of the "Shimmy" reports. I have been abble to make most bikes shimmy, short of the Yeti mountain bike I had 20 years ago.

Gear Talk / Salsa Fargo "on the road"?

Hello everyone,

Charlie here in Chicago.

Anybody have any real world experience touring on a Salsa Fargo? I'm a 47 year old cyclist and have toured on a traditional touring bike, a mountain bike etc in the past 30 years or so. I like the "do-all" idea of the Salsa but wonder how it really might fair as a loaded road rig?

My wife and I are headed to Maine (via northern tier, mostly) and then down to Boston this fall, and I have a chance for a great deal on a Fargo. I am quite familiar with the pros and cons of all this but if you own one, and have done 1000 miles or so of road touring I would love to hear your experience both good and bad.
