Gear Talk / compact double or triple for low gears?

I use a 42-32-22 8 Speed XT with a XTR 12-32 cassette
and need every bit of the low gearing. This is on a mountain bike with 26" wheels and a shock. I use an
Old Man Mountain rack in the front which works well with the shock in place. This gives me a 17.9 and my riding partner uses a 50-32-24 with a 12 -34 for a
19.1. I am 187 pounds and he is 225 and very strong.
I would suggest you get even lower gearing than you
are planning on, especially if you are doing LOADED
SELF-CONTAINED Tours.

I use Jandd panniers and they work great..... since mine are the non-water proof Large Mountain and Mini-Mountain Panniers I just use Space Bags inside and
everything stays dry. Jannd also make high quality waterproof panniers.

If your budget is slim get a Coleman Dome tent. Dimensions are 6'L x 5'W x 4'H. Cost is under $43.00
and you can probably find it even cheaper. Weight is
4 1/2 lbs. I have used one for 9+ years w/o a problem.
Be sure to seal the seams. Amazon has it on sale for
$29.99 right now.

Gear Talk / Butterfly handlebar foam?

I was able to find the Pyramid Foam at a local LBS after visiting 8. I also ordered an extra pack on ebay.
GrabOn also makes a 4 pack of foam meant for road bars.
I am pretty sure the GrabOns will fit my bar too,,, and
since its only 15.00 or so, I ordered a pack of those.
Additionally, I will experiment with various gel pack wraps I have come across.

Gear Talk / Butterfly handlebar foam?

I ordered a butterfly handlebar for my Bontrager MTB
which I use for loading touring from Nashbar. They do not have any foam or really cushioned tape. Does anyone know a good source for the foam? The handlebar is a standard 25.4 size.

Brad thanks for the info........ did you have
any problems with water of food after Biggs until you
reached Lewiston, Id.??? We are carrying stoves yet
plan on cooking minimally....... how many miles a day
did you travel?

Two of us plan to Amtrak Seattle to Portland and do Section 7 (and 6) from there. Any tips or warnings about route? We have the maps and companion book. We also have the Deerfoot Publications Book. Time frame is Jul 6 to Jul 17 for sections 7 and 6. We are going West to East.

Washington option for first few days?

Supposedly a trail near a fish hatchery before Cascade Locks? Anyone know of this?

Particular interest is the area for 100 Miles going EAST from North Roosevelt, Wa or Biggs, Or. It seems a little desolate.

Camping location, food, views, or ???

Someone needs to let Adv. Cycling know that a more
printer friendly version, and even downloadable forms,
of the addendas to route maps needs to be made available. To get copies of the addendas to the 8 Lewis & Clark maps I had to print out both side bars
and the top of the displayed pages to get the addendas.
Which means I will now cut off the excess which is just a waste, and the results are not as functional as they might be.

I attended UBI for the Professional Repair and Shop Operation Course and was thoroughly satisfied. The instructors were A+++. Ashland, Oregon is a fantastic
little town with excellent cycling in the area.

No real specific knowledge of Barnett's.

General Discussion / biketouring with diabetes

I am a diabetic and take 2 types of insulin and metformin/glucophage pills. Lantus once a day and novolog before meals and as needed. The insulin will
last 28+ days if not heated above 86F. If you plan to be riding regularly in higher temperature keep your insulin in a full water bottle which should be the last one you use and the first refilled when cool water is handy. If needed, keep a needle with insulin ready to go in a waterproof pack inside a water bottle.

Also, carry some supplies for low sugar and eat and snack regularly while riding. Keep the meter handy.

Last year I rode 12,000 miles and did quit a bit of loaded touring with absolutely no problems including riding in 110+ degree heart in Western Washington on the Lewis and Clark route.
