General Discussion / around the world trip/ride
« on: October 28, 2006, 11:37:09 pm »
if your looking at doing a "round the world" trip i would say bring bikes with you if you want to ride to get from place to place. It will allow you a freedom that bus/car/train cant give you. However it will restrict you as your bikes become part of your adventure. they will call to you. its weird and i cant explain. if you only want to cycle a bit then rent where you are and when you want. if you are starting in NZ maybe rent the gear there and if you like touring then buy your bikes and gear down there....

ive been on many travels in my young life from being a surf bum sleeping in parks eating cheap noodles  to 4star hotels and island hoppin in the MED. it wasnt until 2 years ago that i found bike touring, and i dont think there is a better way to travel... with any 6 month adventure, commitment and plans can be more of a pain then a pleasure, even when they work out. once you bring a bike you may find theres no going back.

i like the folding bike idea, not my style but neat idea
whatever you chose you will have a great adventure

General Discussion / i would love some advice

good components, lots of differant hand positions, old frame... steal, new frame... whatever, rims 32/36, follow your nose, camp by water, head wind...bad, tornados... not fun, plan you direction and your next meal, journal your thoughts not so much action, sore ass, cars fumes suck, no alarm clocks, listen to your body, eat 10000 calories a day, still be hungry, sunscreen, zinc, freedom is free, one less car, one more mile, grow a beard and remember, school starts in september

General Discussion / Trailer vs Panniers
« on: October 16, 2006, 05:38:28 pm »
i have put a few thousand km on both, and the bob trailer is far better. so much so that in my opinion panniers only use would be commuting to work, or a credit card tour but then you just wouldnt need a bob.
with a BOB you get the aero dynamics, the stabillity, you dont have to worry about weight distribution and it puts far less stress on your spokes

but with a bob you cant slip as easy or should i say whoever is riding with you cant

your going loaded, so bring a bob
have fun

General Discussion / going south
« on: October 03, 2006, 03:54:38 pm »
thanks TJ, but i feel i would be missing alot if i took a bus. i have however moved my departure date up to the end of oct. giving me a window to try and catch the heat and sun. Ive heard that the coast to north cali is good, what about the south part of the divide, would it be worth a trip over to it??

i think passports are manditory for canadians entering the US, have been for a while, i think.

i am looking to ride south for the winter. i'll be leaving vancouver, canada at the begining of december. I have no planed route and i have never be south. My trip will last untill the money runs out, so i will be looking at gurrila camping with a few exceptions(avoiding major populations).if there are any suggestions on routes in U.S. Mexico or futher please tell me
