I plan on riding the NT this summer with my wife who, because of bad knees, rides a motor scooter.  Since she cannot ride on bike paths, we are forced to stay on roads.  Here is a portion of the cue sheet we will be using; it generally follows NY Bike Route 5 parallel to the Erie Canal:

On route to Niagara Falls, ON.

Off route at Imlay City to Ludington via Birch Run, Alma, Big Rapids.

Ferry to Manitowoc, WI and join ACA North Lakes Section 2.

Off route near Riverdale to hit motels in Brillion, rejoin route at Wrightstown.

Off route to New London, Stevens Point, Marshfield, Augusta, Eau Claire, Menomonie, Baldwin, New Richmond, Center City (MN), join ACA NT at Cambridge.

Off route at Long Prairie to Alexandria, Fergus Falls, rejoin ACA NT at Fargo.

Off route at Argusville (north of Fargo), then Hillsboro, Mayville, rejoin at Cooperstown.

On route to Minot, ND then old ACA route through Old Town (Four Bears Lodge, I want to hit the Affiliated Tribes Museum) to Williston.

On route to Browning, MT (War Bonnet Motel).

Off route to Babb (Montana's Duck Lake Lodge) via Duck Lake Rd to avoid RVs on US 89.

Rejoin ACA NT at Babb and follow it (via Going to the Sun Highway) to Anacortes, WA.

Total miles: 3,585.

btw: I'm riding a "funny" bike too - a recumbent.

It's doable. I'm planning on doing a modified Northern Tier E>W this summer with hotels every 50-70 miles.  Biggest gap: Fargo, ND to Cooperstown (96 miles).  I'll go off route at Argusville and stay on CR 81 to Mayville (2 motels), then rejoin at Cooperstown.

I can post other route mods if you're interested.

Routes / Cookie Lady Book Now Online
« on: December 08, 2008, 11:42:32 am »
In 1996, June Curry's cousin-in-law, Bev Haven, published a book of June's anecdotes entitled "The Cookie Lady of Afton, Virginia".  The book is currently out of print, but the author has agreed to allow it to be published on the web.

Routes / Bike House Not Yet Open
« on: May 27, 2008, 08:42:52 pm »
As of last month, she continues to receive visitors at her house.  However, she is elderly, and hard of hearing.  This means:

A) You might end up hearing the same story multiple times.
B) It's pretty much impossible to have a two-way conversation with her.  If you ask a follow-up question, she usually doesn't hear you.  When my wife and I visit, we just let her ramble, and listen to her stories (sometimes multiple time - see point A).

By all means, stop by and visit; she has some fascinating stories to tell.

Routes / Bike House Not Yet Open

I guess the problem is that we're getting conflicting info from June and Debbie.  Here's what June wrote me on Friday 4/18:

"Still don't have the Bike House open but let people see it.  Finally got the water on properly but need shower work."

Routes / Bike House Not Yet Open
« on: April 12, 2008, 09:10:05 pm »
Just visited June Curry, aka The Cookie Lady, and she says the Bike House is not open and she has no idea when it WILL be open.  She's already turned away five bikers this year.

June no longer owns her residence or the bike house.  The current owner is renovating parts of the bike house, and she has no control over when or what is done.  In addition, some local bikers, who in years past had helped prepare the bike house for the season, have not shown up this year.

Soooo, don't plan on staying at the bike house anytime soon.
