Routes / Southern Tier beginning Sept. 15th

I have noticed that most riders do the Southern Tier in February. I am thinking about mid-September, going West to East. I plan to ride between 50-70 per day (weather and terrain permitting). What are the reasons that most people go in February? Is September to hot in the west? I realize that I will be losing daylight as I head east but from the maps it seems like camping and hotels are closer together in these sections of the map. Thoughts!!! I could use some sound advice. Thanks!
