I saw some plastic bottled Coleman White Gas that were about 1 qt.  More expensive than the cost per qt of the gal Coleman White Gas can.  In the past, I have bought gas from local campers, some would just fill your bottle.  An other way was to buy the can and then share with the others at the first night camping or the sales reps at the store who camp.

Propane will work fine but the weight is just to much for me.  I ride with one other and we share an MSR Whisperlite and have the cleaning kit and windscreen from some scrap aluminum.  We us one MSR bottle and fill it at stores with white gas.  Someone is always pleased to get the rest of the can free and we build good will for help with anything else we need.

In a larger group where you can spread out the weight more than a light propane stove would be OK.

I saw on the ACA article that Salsa Cycles has a bike marketed for the GDMBR.  The fargo Complete.

Look good but I did not see front suspension on the bike.  Everything I have read suggest front suspension.  There are several post on the internet with problems with the full suspension bikes.

My experience is if you are riding self contained, it is all about weight.  Just like in backpacking.  Less is more.  Secondly, it is all about reducing risk of equipment failure.  Back to my Army days, you sometime wonder why equipment is the way it is but think about reliability.  Even the trailers seem to be problematical.

Just like the prior post said.  If you use a stove get one of the major brand and I would suggest if you are going to use unleaded gasoline then buy a cleaning kit to make sure you can clean the internal parts.

I carry the fuel in a MSR bottle, then fill the stove.

I like my coffee and hot oatmeal in the AM to get moving.

A bike path across America would be wonderful.  There are many examples of long bike paths that could be weaved together to make this dream a reality.  Some that come to mind are the Katy Trail, the John Wayne, the 400, the Cardinal, C&O/Gap, Miami Valley, and many more.  Great idea and some of the seeds are being planted by ASSHTO.
