You know that route did look neat, but I think I'm just going to go with Route 17 since it's more convenient for me and I can visit some friends in Binghamton on the way. Let me know how your trip goes afterwords and I'll let you know how mine goes?

Wow thank you so much for that reply Old Zephr. That will be a big help, since I know suburban areas can be hard to navigate due to heavy traffic. I'm winging so much of this trip already so it's nice to have some idea of what to expect.

Well I'm actually trying to get to Palatine, which is a little northwest of Chicago, but I thought it might be easier to take the metra from downtown since it's pretty cheap. Either way, I can figure something out once I'm in the general area of chicago. It's just getting to that general area that I'm not entirely sure about.

And I'm not sure how well google maps works with bikes as it's given me some scary routes when I try to use it around Westchester where I live, though I guess that was my backup plan. Thanks for the reply though. The prospect of a good burger is always a motivator.

Routes / Connecting Northern Tier to Chicago

I was wondering if anybody had some insight on the best way to get to chicago from the northern tier route. I'm going from east to west and I would like to end at chicago, but I'm not sure when and where I should route off of the ACA trail. I don't have a great sense of direction, so I'm looking for something simple. I see that illinois has mapped out the state for bikes, but I'm not sure where to start, or if I'd be better off rerouting from Indiana or Ohio.

For biking east to west, how does bike route 17 compare with bike route 5 and with the ACA northern tier through new york? I live in the hudson valley and I can take a train up as far up as poughkeepsie if need be. I'm not sure whether I should just go for the closest (route 17) or take route 9 north to either route 5 or the northern tier. Anyone have some thoughts? I don't mind traffic as long as there are big shoulders and I don't mind shoulderless lanes provided the traffic is very light.

I'm also considering biking new york state route 17 to head west. I live in the hudson valley of New York. I heard from other forums that Pennsylvania is pretty hilly, but I don't know how it compares to route 17. I'd also be curious if anybody has biked it.

Hi all. I was wondering if anybody had any experience with the new york state bike routes. I'm planning to bike to chicago in June and I live in the hudson valley just north of NYC. Route 17 runs the southern tier of New York and is probably the most convenient, but I could also take route 9 up north, which could either connect to route 5 to go west or all the way up to ticonderoga to connect with the northern tier route. Has anybody biked the state routes? I like the idea of just following one road, which would simplify things. If it gets too hilly, I have no qualms about getting off and walking. I just want to take things leisurely and enjoy things.
