That's a great idea taking a ferry. I never thought about that.
I'm on a computer for the first time in three weeks, so I'm going to do some research on this, but I'm really pumped about the idea of skipping the southern part of Lake Michigan entirely.

I left on my westward bike tour about 3 weeks ago, I've been mainly following a combo of the Northern Tier and the NY Erie Canal trails since then. I'm in Cleveland now and I'm about to leave the Northern Tier to head up to Ann Arbor and then over to Chicago. Getting to AA isn't an issue, but any recommendations of getting from AA to Chicago. I'm trying to avoid gravel/ dirt roads (something I remember seeing the area around AA) and I'm trying to avoid Gary Indiana (I've had a few friends strongly encourages avoiding Gary). If you could recommend the best (safest) route between those areas I'd really appreciate it.

I tried following the Erie Canal trail using the map the NY State parks and canals department sells and it was terrible. It was the worst map I've ever used. I eventually just gave up and basically followed RT20 and occasionally some parallel roads. You were wise to avoid using the trail.
Caveat: The trail was pretty nice from just east of Syracuse to about Lockport, but I thought the rest was a waste of time compared to mapping on my phone and using the road.

I'll be riding across NY in a few weeks and will probably take the Erie Canal trail from Albany to Buffalo, have you looked into this route? I haven't gotten a copy of the official new york erie canal trail guide, but it looks like a relatively safe way to get across the state, not to mention beautiful and relatively free of excessive climbs.

New England / New Haven to Albany, suggested routes?

Hey bikers. I'm setting out on a lengthy tour starting June 11th, and I've managed to plot out a good deal of my trip, but I'm having trouble with the first few days. I'm leaving from New Haven and heading to Albany before taking the Erie Canal trail across NY. I'm not sure about the best route from New Haven to Albany, any advice would be greatly appreciated.
