GPS & Digital Data Discussion / Re: Anyone using SPoT Tracker for Trips?
« on: December 26, 2010, 10:08:18 pm »
I've owned a "SPOT" of 4 to 5 years. I use it for bike touring and back country canoe trips. The tracking function is a great form of entertainment for friends/workmates who are checking on your progress during your trip. On my bike trips, I tend to keep the SPOT on my person in the event that I land in a ditch/covert as a result of a inattentive driver. The 911 function is somewhat reassuring, and hopefully during such an event I would be of a state of mind were I would have the ability to activate it.

General Discussion / Re: Yellowstone for up to 4 days
« on: December 26, 2010, 09:22:30 pm »
I passed through Yellowstone the first week of July 2010. Some campgrounds have hiker/biker campsites available, no reservations are requried and the cost is very reasonable. I camped at Bay Bridge and Madison Junction. Some of the campgrounds donot open until the 2nd to 3rd week of June, so it would be best to research early on to confirm opening dates.  Hope this helps.

General Discussion / Re: Shipping a bike through REI

I've had a great experience with REI this summer. I've shipped with them twice this year and experienced no problems.  Disassembly, boxing and shipping ran around 160.00.

The following is the reply from Yellowstone NP when I posed the same question.

Greetings From Yellowstone!

Each campground has sites that are for backpackers and bikers only.  You do not have to have reservations.

Thank You,

Linda

Routes / Re: Help planning from WI to Yellowstone
« on: February 22, 2010, 08:52:33 pm »
I road the interstate between Gillette and Buffalo this past summer and found it to be OK....Wide, relatively clean shoulders...What helped is that the right lane was being resurfaced and I was riding on freshly laid asphalt.  Buffalo to Ten Sleep is an interesting ride...The ride from the summit into Ten Sleep is a blast..

General Discussion / Re: Best Cell phone coverage across US???
« on: February 22, 2010, 08:45:23 pm »
Forget Sprint..coverage is horrible....I have both Sprint (work) and Verizon (personnel) phones. I travel to all fifty states and I'm happy with Verizon.  I've had some experience with AT&T and was pleased with that service as well.
