Routes / Weather in the TransAm Mountains
« on: April 15, 2013, 05:54:27 pm »
Hello all! I will be cycling the TransAm this summer from West to East starting June 9th. As I've been getting my packing list together, there's one aspect of it that I'm not sure about and I can't seem to find online. I'll be in the Rockies From late June through most of July and camping more often than not. What kind of weather can I expect during those nights? That is - how warm do I need to pack? I suppose it's no tragedy to pack an extra sweater if needed, but I'd like to try and avoid that.

Routes / Gravel roads leading into the TramsAM Teton Spur?
« on: April 09, 2013, 12:57:41 pm »
Hey all, I will be traveling the TransAM this summer and taking the Teton Spur on my way. Due to being a completely broke college student, I will be doing the trip on my road bike instead of a touring bike. My question is in regards to the gravel roads leading to and from Jackson on the Teton Spur. Exactly how graveley are we talking? I've been on trails with tightly packed small-grained gravel with my road bike and haven't had a problem. But if it's super chunky loose gravel I'll have to skip the spur. Any thoughts/help would be greatly appreciated!

General Discussion / Re: Traffic conditions around the ACA routes?

Splendid! Thanks for the responses!

Another way to get magical empty roads is to finid routes with short unpaved stretches.
For example - between Archville and Beantown the main highway is 30 miles all paved -
But there is a back road that's 34 miles with 5 miles unpaved.  It will usually have almost zero traffic.

Is there any best way to find these magical empty roads? I'm guessing a mixture of cross referencing the ACA maps with the DOT maps from various states then using google streetview and checking. Any personal experience with finding the right types of roads?

Hey all, sorry if this is a repost! I've done a bit of searching and couldn't find anything on this - although I may have not gotten the correct keywords.

I'll be doing a cross country trip this summer staying mostly on the TransAm path laid out in the ACA maps. I was wondering - what types of roads does the path follow? That is - is car traffic very heavy? If so, how possible is it to follow the general path of the ACA map but stick to less busy roads?

Oops! Right-o, will do

I'll be doing a self-supported cross country trip this summer and am currently considering the best method of carrying all of my gear. I'm currently leaning towards a trailer - it seems like it would be a little less hassle compared to saddle bags. Thoughts? Experience?

Hey all, I was looking through a lot of the other posts but didn't see anything about this topic. Sorry in advance for the newbie question!

As far as I understand it, the Great Divide has a mountain biking route and a cycling route. Will any road/touring bike be acceptable on the cycling routes through the Great Divide?
