I was there yesterday and the road is closed several days this week. I only got through because it was veterans day and most of the crews were not working.  In general I would say this route is quite dangerous right now as the lanes are shifted to accommodate the construction and there  is no shoulder with huge mine trucks racing inches from you.

I walked the bike a fair piece of the way with it between me and the trucks right on the edge of the tarmac

Southwest / Cyclist friendly motel in Sanderson Tx

The proprietoress of the outback oasis motel in Sanderson told me she likes to be helpful to cyclists & said she had driven an eastbound cyclist 120 miles to Del Rio to the bike shop when he had three broken spokes.

Southwest / Southern Tier: Food in Valentine, Texas
« on: April 07, 2014, 05:16:37 pm »
If you are taking the "Marfa detour", & pass through Valentine, Texas on a school day, you can obtain water & possibly food at the school. Water is free & they sold me chicken burritos at $2 apiece two weeks ago.

Probably best to call ahead.

Update: I finally made this trip & rode on the access road & did not enter the shed. An officer drove up & questioned me, but did not tell me I had done anything wrong.

Hi Jennifer,

Tragically, my mother was diagnosed with two kinds of advanced cancer this week. She is in Spain & the doctors say she has one to three months to live.  We are flying to see her & say goodbye. I have had to postpone the trip indefinitely.

The best laid plans...

Hi Jennifer,

That is the way I interpreted the conversation I had with the supervisor at the checkpoint. I sent a separate message to cartography with the phone number of the checkpoint & got a reply from Carla Majernik. The supervisor was the one who said "But you're going to ride on the access road right?"

Anyway, that is what I plan to do. Leaving El Paso Nov 3rd, God willing.

Hi Jamawani,

I have dual citizenship US/Canada. I am still at my house in Dallas. I plan riding east from  El Paso toward Austin as I mention above.
The ACA map says you must go through the checkpoint. I was concerned about the logistics of getting through the checkpoint.

Hope this helps,

I was worried about the border checkpoint & how to get through it eastbound , so I called the checkpoint & was just told by a supervisor that I should stay on the access road, crossing to the north side access road at Lasca Rd. &  proceed east on the access road. An officer will interrogate me near the checkpoint.

This is different than what the map says, so I wanted to mention it here.

I have seen snow in El Paso in mid-late December.  I am tentatively planning to do the El Paso to Austin section starting October 30.
