Colorado / WELCOME !

Hello, fellow-cyclists --

We have started this forum in response to requests from many of the folks who were at a member gathering in the Denver area last September.

It took a while to get it set up, because the folks in ACA's Missoula office had to wait until they acquired new software to manage their online forums. Nevertheless, we're finally up and running with the first-ever electronic exchange for Adventure Cycling members in a single state.

We'll be moderating this forum, and we look forward to meeting and cycling with many of you.

Colorado / Colorado Cycling Routes & Resources

Hi, all !

Late last Fall, the 41-mile Rio Grande rail-trail between Glenwood Springs and Aspen was officially completed.

There is now a map of the trail available online at: http://www.rfta.com/trailmap.pdf . There are
reportedly about 8 miles of unpaved surface remaining on this trail, but there are alternate paved roads that
can be used as a work-around.

Colorado / Informal ACA Rides Here in Colorado

Hi, all --

I'm starting up this discussion thread because I've had a number of previous requests from Colorado members for a way to connect with others to arrange rides in this area.

You're invited to tell this online community about your riding interests: day rides, weekend overnight trips, week-long or other multi-day trips -- either self-contained or by using your credit card to cover the logistics. I have also found that it's useful to be pretty specific in describing your own riding preferences for such things as daily distance, riding pace/speed, what area you prefer to ride in, etc. when you are seeking riding companions.

If you are unfamiliar with the logistics of organizing and planning a multi-day and/or self-contained trip, I and many other folks in this forum will be happy to share our experience with you. It's not really rocket science, and different arrangements will work for different people, but we'll all try to ensure that everyone's on-the-road experience gets better. It's especially my hope that anyone who is anticipating their first overnight bike trip will use this space to make that experience a great one.

Colorado / Re: Introduce Yourself

Hi, all !

I am Frank Moritz, and I live in Centennial, CO which is just south of Denver. I am an Adventure Cycling tour leader and training instructor, and I'm also a member of ACA's Board of Directors.

Wally Werner and I have agreed to moderate this first-ever statewide Adventure Cycling member forum in the hope that it will respond to many requests from our Colorado members for a way to make it easier for members here to get together for local rides and other gatherings. The co-moderator of this forum is my neighbor, Wally Werner. Wally is also a long-time ACA tour leader, and is a primary instructor and curriculum developer for our training courses. Together, we hope to generate a lively exchange of cycling-related ideas and information among our members here -- and also with anyone who is interested in travel by bicycle.

We will look in on this forum on a regular basis, but it will be primarily up to the participants to keep the conversation and the exchange of information going. However, if you have a concern or a question for which you need an urgent response, I invite you to contact me directly:

I agree that you're likely to encounter tough weather on this schedule, and not only in the Rockies in Colorado.

Utah's canyon country is at a higher elevation than most folks realize, and so are the mountain ranges in Nevada's "basin and range" country.
