Youth Bicyle Travel / Help needed
« on: February 02, 2008, 02:26:54 am »
You will probably have to give up on the teenagers.  We did.  We took our (now) 18 and 16 year old boys on quite a few fairly ambitious tours when they were younger (Santa Barbara to San Diego, Arizona, West Virginia, etc.).  Now they have their own interests and that doesn't include biking, at least for the forseeable future.  But if they ever meet girls who are interested in riding, and tell them about the trips they did, who knows?

Ride all you can with the 8-year-old, and try to coax the 11-year-old sometimes.  Don't oversell it.  If you try to force the 11 yr old to ride, it will backfire on you.

Routes / 2005 Cycle Washington -- any kids?
« on: June 23, 2005, 08:37:16 pm »
My wife, our six-year-old, and I are going to do the 2005 Cycle Washington Adventure Cycle tour.  Is anyone else doing this with kids?  We are hoping Pete will have someone to play with in the campgrounds.

Routes / cost of campgrounds on west coast?
« on: June 23, 2005, 08:33:06 pm »
The state parks along the coast in Southern California charge reasonable camping fees--I think about $15/night--but good luck getting a place on a weekend in the summer.  Some campgrounds have "Bike and Hike" spaces, but often these are occupied by homeless people.  Also, there are no state parks along the coast from north of Malibu to southern Orange County, about 90 miles.

There are some state and county parks a little inland that can provide nice alternatives.  They may not be as crowded; a few have biker/hiker spaces.
