Gear Talk / Klymit vs. Therma-Rest sleeping pads
« on: February 19, 2017, 12:40:37 pm »
Just wondering if anyone has experience using both of these pads and how they compare?  The Klymit have some nice sounding features but do they work? They seem to be plenty light and compact when packed and they are thick, so are they comfortable and durable?

Just wondering

Gear Talk / Re: Which triple crankset will fit my bike?
« on: January 19, 2014, 11:01:48 am »
Thanks for the advice guys. I think I will go the new chainring route and keep it simple. I didn't know I could get a 24 in 74 BCD. I am new at this touring stuff. Thinking 50-36-24, that gives me a good spread of choices with my 34-12 cassette. It is just like my compact road cranks with the 24 for loaded hills, I like it.

I started looking for chainrings online and there aren't many places that have much selection, any suggestions/

Thanks again,

Jack

It does look like the Sugino is the better option, I don't really need to go as small as 22-32-42. This has been a lot of help, Thanks.

More helpful info, I wasn't sure if the MTB frt. der. would work with the brifters, oh well. The Tiagra will be my  plan B

I will look into the Sugino cranks, just trying to keep the cost down at first.

I am already running a 34-12 cassette and long cage derailleur so cranks are the next step.

Thanks again,

Jack

I appreciate the input TokyoNose, a valid point to consider. If I have to swap the front derailleur to a MTB one will my current brifters be compatible with it? I currently have about 2 cm. of clearance between the chainstay and my front derailleur, do you think the MTB crankset will drop it more than 2 cm?

Thanks

Thanks for the very useful info Wayne and Dave. I am leaning towards going with MTB cranks at the moment to get the gearing I want. I will probably go the ebay route for some lightly used XTs to keep the cost down. Just have to be sure and get the correct BB. Thanks again,  Jack

I am currently running a 9 speed drivetrain with a Shimano Ultegra 6503 triple crankset,52-42-30. I haven't had the bottom bracket apart but will assume it is an Octolink but not sure if it is a V1 orV2. I want to go to smaller chainrings, maybe 44-32-22. What 9 speed cranks will fit my bottom bracket? If they are mountain bike cranks, which I assume they probably will be, are there other considerations to make? Will any mountain bottom bracket s fit a road bike? Is BB width an issue?

Thanks

Gear Talk / Rear rack for Nashbar panniers?
« on: December 03, 2013, 07:46:06 am »
I'm starting out on the low budget touring. Ordered Nashbars waterproof panniers and was wondering if anyone else is using these and if so what rear rack works good with them? I've read here that sometimes panniers and rack don't match up so well and thought I would check here for some recommendations. I was thinking about the Topeak Supertourist Rack with sidebar, has anyone tried it?

Thanks

Gear Talk / Re: Why are most of the tires wire bead?
« on: December 02, 2013, 07:53:24 am »
Thanks for the feedback folks, there is hope. I was finding mostly Schwalbe tires which were wire bead. The Vittoria are a nice looking tire. I'm just starting so I'm only going weekends or maybe a week at a time.

I forgot about the british connection, I've bought some stuff there before.

Mr Nelson, I'm just curious what tires you use for just for reference.

Again thanks for the help.

I'm a newbie to touring and am outfitting a bike for some spring time touring. Almost all the tires I look at are wire bead. I would like folding so I can pack them for a trip. I am looking for 700c x 32 at a reasonable cost around $40. Am I looking in the wrong places too cheap or what?

Thanks

Jack
