General Discussion / Re: Flying with a bike . Help!
« on: November 19, 2015, 04:47:38 pm »
Hi - I flew on Alaska with my bike in August 2015 (LAX to Bellingham)and it was a great experience.  I just packed it in a discarded bike shipping box I got (for free) from my local bike shop.  This excellent article from ACA was also a great resource:

http://www.adventurecycling.org/resources/how-to-department/routes-maps-logistics/boxing-your-bicycle/

The overweight/oversize charge was $75 (as per their website) and their staff was super helpful and friendly.  They even delivered my bike to me personally in the Bellingham airport, and then one of the baggage guys helped me take the bike out so he could reuse the box.

I would definitely fly with them again.

Cheers,
Ron

I did it back in early August of this year and found it to be no worse than certain sections of other 2 lane highways.  It was relatively early (7:00 a.m.) on a Monday morning so that may have been a factor.

Martin -
Finding water between the west entrance of Yosemite and Olancha will not be an issue - all along HWY 395 there are plenty of gas/convenience stores, and inside the park (Yosemite) there are campgrounds and streams/rivers.

I am not familiar with the Sierra north of yosemite.

Cheers,
Ron

Martin -
i am quite familiar with most of the area from Yosemite (day 18) to Big Bear (day 24)- feel free to use me as a resource as you get closer to your trip.  A couple minor suggestions:

Day 18:  You might consider staying in Lee Vining instead of June Lake - you don't need to leave 395 like you will for June Lake and it is just a little less scenic.  I have stayed at Murphy's Motel and always been satisfied.

Day 20:  Consider staying in Lone Pine instead of Olancha.  Lone Pine is a much nicer town (they even have a hostel) and Olancha doesn't have much in the way of lodging.  it only adds 25 miles to your next day.

Cheers!
Ron
