I'm not sure there is a $500 mountain bike I would trust on a trip like that.  You are likely to spend more time fixing than riding. $500 is about what you should be spending on the wheel set, not the whole bike. I would recommend something like the Surly Troll with 1.75 or 2.0 marathon mondials. You didn't say if you were supported or un-supported. If you are supported you can get away with a more normal mountain bike that may be available at a reasonable price on the used market. Definitely check out adventure cycling.

I still think it would be cool to be riding a Yeti through the Himalayas.

I've seen that some people tour with these as an alternative to clips or cages.

Keen Targhee II. Toe box is big.  May not work great with cages. See my previous on cages and cleats. They are waterproof which is a good thing.

Sorry, I'm not debating, that's why I stated it as opinion. Just trying to provide info for the OP. If you have limited funds it doesn't get much cheaper than flats and shoes you already own.

I love SPD for off road. I haven't done a long tour yet, but my touring/commuting bike is set up with MKS Lambda pedals and I wear any shoes I want from Chacos to hiking boots. When I do go touring I plan to take the Chacos and some type of light weight hiker or trail runner. IMHO clips or SPD are unnecessary for on road touring.

Classifieds / FS: Xtracycle conversion cargo bike

Built on a Specialized Stumpjumper M2 frame, 17".

$950 plus shipping from SoCal if required.

I really like this bike, but it has to go so I can build a 29er touring bike.  I use it as a commuter where it really shines.  It's nice not having to put anything on your back when you ride.  I regularly put my tennis gear, work clothes, lunch, water jug, and laptop in the free loaders and there is room to spare. This build has around 850 miles on it.  Most of the parts were new at that time.  The bike has only been used on-road since the Xtracycle conversion.

-1995 Stumpjumper M2 Team Frame 17"/Medium
-Salsa Chromoto front fork
-Salsa Woodchipper II Bars 46cm
-Cane Creek Road Levers
-Cane Creek Cross Levers
-Avid BB7 Road Disc Brakes, 203mm rear, 160mm front
-XT-M756 Hubs 6 bolt disc with Sun Rhinolite rims, 32H, 2.0 straight gauge spokes
-Schwalbe Big Apple 2.0 tires
-XT Skewers
-XT front derailleur
-LX rear derailleur
-SRAM 970 9-speed rear cassette 11-34
-Deore Octalink Crankset, 175mm, 44-32-22
-Kalloy Uno 27.2 seatpost shimmed to 30.9
-SDG Ventura Comp Ti saddle
-Specialized seatpost clamp
-70mm x 17 deg stem
-Minoura accessory mount
-Cateye Mity 2 computer
-Cateye Opticube headlight
-Cateye Taillight
-ESI RCT Bar Tape (Awesome stuff!)
-Shimano 8-9 speed bar end shifters

-Xtracycle Free Radical frame
-Xtracycle vertical bars
-Xtracycle Free Loaders
-Xtracycle Flight Deck Two
-Xtracycle Footies
-Xtracycle Wide Loaders
-Xtracycle Rack Locks
-Kickstand
-Stoker bar with stem and shim for 27.2 seatpost

Condition:
Headset and hubs recently lubed and adjusted.  Chain checked for wear and has lots of miles left according to Rholoff stretch guage.  Wheels tensioned, trued, and stress relieved.  Xtracycle frame has been treated with frame saver.

The frame was ridden off-road prior to conversion to an Xtracycle.  It has typical chips for a used mountain frame. No dents I have been able to notice.   There are scratches from chain suck and chain slap. Cranks have scratches and rubs.  The road levers are scratched, hoods are fine.  Underside of wide loaders have some scratches from the curb.  Lock tab on taillight mount is broken. SDG saddle has fraying on corners. The Freeloader bags have some wear on the back side where they contact the frame.
