Routes / Re: Norther Tier - options around the Great Lakes

Am considering same options, but with wrinkle of having two kids on tandems.   are there any advantages to taking the regular northern tier route down into iowa, indiana, illinois, in terms of interesting sights or destinations for kids?   what are pros and cons of north vs. south shore of lake erie?   Is traffic more of an issue on one route vs. another?

thanks john.   we are taking our two kids on tandems.  so looking for route that will optimize entertainment/education/cool factor for 10 and 12 year olds.   and yes scenery is not bad either.

trying to get suggestions on whether to take Northern Tier route down into Midwest, or take the NorthLakes/Erie Connector to cut across Wisconsin/Michigan.  anyone done both?
