Gear Talk / Re: Advice for choosing components to reduce gear inches

Consider looking at the Wolftooth Goatlink and Tanpan and using those in conjunction with a 40 or 42 tooth cassette. Might be the simplest fix.

Is there a geometry difference in the flat/drop models or did they just dictate the color and build?

General Discussion / Re: Bicycle Dynamo Charger

I have a Shutter Precision dynamo with a Busch and Muller Luxos U light.  The light comes with a handlebar remote and USB connector and I highly recommend it for that reason.  I can charge my phone directly or charge a portable battery while riding.

I guess the answer you're looking for is "no," then.

Some "adventure" bikes have them tubeless or tubeless ready, like the Niner RLT or Jamis Drafonslayer.

I know Joe Bike ships bikes for these things, they probably receive them as well.  They are big into touring bikes as well.

I had the same issue.  Loved my WTB tubeless Nanos but couldn't do that after making the switch to 27.5/650b.  I went with the very similar Vittoria Mezcal and I'm extremely happy! Be sure to get the TNT (tubeless) variety,  and they come in 2.1" or 2.25".

I would love to tour in Japan! Unfortunately it's not a realistic option for at least a year.  How is the riding around you?

Sounds like something in the Willamette Valley or near Bend would be great for you guys.   The Willamette Valley Scenic Bikeway starts near Portland and goes to Eugene. It hits towns like Albany, Corvallis and Salem along the way.   Going from Eugene to Bend or vice versa is also popular.  Neither have good loops though unless you go longer or deal with high traffic.

I'm always up for meeting local tourers! It's surprisingly hard,  there isn't much activity on Meetup or the above mentioned sites.  I'm a 31 year old guy and have been into cycling the past few years,  and backpacking for 10 or so.

Gear Talk / Re: 700x40 vs. 27.5 (650b)x48
« on: February 20, 2016, 12:48:19 am »
With 650b you can get wider tires but with the same rolling diameter as thinner 700c tires.  For instance, 650bx48 might have the same "height" as 700x25.  But with a larger contact area than the 25mm tires.

This is good for bikes that have clearance issues on the fork or chainstays due to the roll height, but have some width to spare.  My bike can fit 29x2.1" tires but if I go 650b it can fit 650bx2.3" tires.

As for the original question.  I think 40 is plenty sufficient for gravel and road.  I like my 700x38s for the same conditions, just make sure you get something sidewall protection and tread or puncture protection.

For exactly the reason he said: wider tires.

I bought a Soma Wolverine that I'm happy with, very versatile.  Velo Orange has a new frame called the Piolet that sounds pretty much like what you describe.

Not sure about the VO frame, but the Wolverine is doable with $1500.

Thanks, that was a great read! I just bought a Surface and was wondering what offline maps people liked to use for that?  Lucky, what map apps did you consider the most useful for routes and points of interest? Maybe some of them are multiplatform...
