Hello, I'm starting my trip on the pc, from seattle to san francisco. Tonight I've been evacuated from the campgeound justat the entrance of mount rainier np because of a wilfire, and I underztand that things are even worser down the coast in southern oregon. What to you suggest, shall I change my plans? To ride where? Knowing that I have my flight back early october from san francisco.I can move to a different area, but not too far, and I have to be back in sf anyway

Excellent!
The option with bike racks sounds better than putting the bike in the baggage storage, you never know. I would just be a shame to miss Cannon beach and Manzanita, wouldn't it? But I see that the Tillamook County Transit has a coastal line, maybe I can catch it to go north and back

Thank you! That's great, I'll just have to find the bus stop in Seattle, I hop it won't be too hard.
I'm also looking for buses carrying bicycles on the Oregon/North California Coast, to spare some days to go up to Crater Lake and/or to rest if it rains, and as far as I see, almost all the lines have bike racks.

I will surely skip the Portland-Astoria stretch. I read the thread about it in this forum: the only way is still to carry the bikes on the amtrak bus?

Hello,

I will have to go from Seattle to Auburn, to join the SC.
I found a train line (Sounder Train), it carries bicycles but its schedules are pretty weird (I must leave in the morning, and no train circulates between 6:50AM and 2PM).
Or a bus line (578) but I can't see if the bus has bike racks.
Anyone may help me?

Unfortunately I must make a choice, I won't have enough time to do all I hoped.

What do you think?
The Oregon Coast (Astoria to Florence) or Crater Lake (than I'll go down to the coast in Redwood NP)?
I can't made up my mind and give up Crater Lake, but everybody say the Oregon coast is magnificent.

In any case, I'll go down the California Coast all way from Redwood to SF, do you think that I'll have enough of the coast in CA and it's worth giving up the OR and go up to Crater Lake?

I'l still working on my itinerary.
I'm finally going to skip Olympics, everybody says it's really rainy, and not particularly interesting by bike.

I plan to follow a stretch of the SC on my way from Auburn to Portland (see below)
I was thinking about riding east of Mount Rainier and don't enter the Park and avoid the way up to Paradise. It would take too long if I want to ride all the way to San Francisco.
Do you think it's worth going to Paradise anyway (knowing that I won't be equipped for hiking), and rather catch a bus/train somewhere, or I'll have enough view of mount Rainer from the route?

Sorry if I hurt your feelings, I didn't mean to.
As I said I didn't know Wyoming at all before, just as I didn't know the other states I visited, so my point of view is as candid as it might be.
I don't think I met many tourists (excepted in Jackson Hole, of course), and no cyclists at all.
My impression comes from how people answered when we asked directions, or asked to fill our bottles with water, or to share a campsite in a full campground at dusk, so I agree it's not an evidence at all, as I said it was just a general feeling I didn't have in other places.

Utah SB are great, people are friendly and scenaries are wow.
I loved Montana too and Wyoming, but in Wyoming I somehow felt I wasn't really welcome as a cyclist, I mean I felt like I was a UFO, as I didn't carry a gun and drive a truck. I didn't know Wyoming before, so I don't think I went there with some bias against cowboys, and I didn't have the same feeling in Montana neither. Well, I don't want to hurt anyone, I really loved Wyoming and I had no bad experience there, but it was just a feeling I didn't have anywhere else on my way thru the National Parks, down to Arizona and Nevada.

Maybe someone have an explanation to this thing? Or maybe it was just my imagination?

Up-dating my plan.
I definitely want to see Yosemite, it's a chance I can't miss, to see it in september and avoid the summer crowds.
But six weeks are not enough to do it all by bike. So I plan to make two different stretches:

1) Washington+Oregon: Olympic, the coast down to Astoria: some advice for somenthing more? NOrth Cascades/Mount Rainier/Mount St Helens/more Pacific Coast?

2) Crater Lake (I can take the Coast STarlight to Chemult), Sierra Cascade to Lake Tahoe+Yosemite, Kings? Sequoia (but the stretch approaching Yosemite seems strenuous)

or Crater Lake-Redwood NP, up again to Lessen Volcanic and/or some transport to Yosemite?

Maybe the best is to go to Lake Tahoe, go down to Sonora and take a Yarts bus?

Hello,

this subjects is very interesting to me. I plan to visit WA National Parks and then go down towards south OR or CA to visit Redwood and Yosemite, but I probably won't have the time to ride all the way down.
So if I understand well (sorry, I'm Italian):

'roll-on' means you don't have to put your bike in a cardboard box or bag?
That would be great!

Do you know other ways to transport your bike in the area?
Last year I used Greyhound from SLC to Saint George and it was not very easy.
But from Meab to Provo I took an Elevated bus and it was extra-confort: they had a sort of 'drawer' that came out from the baggage store, to put your bike on, I didn't even need to pack it

General Discussion / 6 week trip from Seattle to San Francisco

Hello,
I plan to travel by bike from WA to CA next september, starting from Seattle to end in San Francisco. This is the general idea, but I need some help for the details.
I would like to combine three cycling routes: the Olympic lap, the Pacific Coast and the Sierra Cascades.
I only have 6 weeks and I can ride in average 50 miles per day. So I can count on about 1500 miles.
Olympic and Seattle are mandatory for me, but for the rest I don't know what to choose: everybody says the Oregon coast is beautiful, but that would mean I shall say goodbye to Mount Rainer, maybe Crater Lake, Lassen Volcanic...
My priority: great landscapes. Last year I've travelled from Montana to Arizona thru the Parks, so the competition is rude! But I know that in the US there is more, (maybe not better).
Would you advise to take a transport to switch some not so interesting area, to spare energy and miles to reach Yosemite? Is that possible (to take a bus or something)? I would arrive there at the end of september, sounds a good time.

Please, let me know what you think about it, and see you soon on the routes!

Yes,thanks. That's one of the articles I had read and that deeply impressed me.
No doubt that I'll not dare to ride the tunnel. I was indeed lookinf for information about how to avoid it.
But if the chances to be hitch hicked are real, I'll take my chance
