General Discussion / Re: First section of Trans Am in June

Decided to switch directions and go east to west.  In Yorktown now and riding out tomorrow.  See you all out on the trail.  Safe travels!

Hi Jennifer -

I purchased the paper maps prior to the availability of the digital.  Does the digital do turn by turn navigation/prompting? Or is it more of static map (like the paper copies). Trying to determine if I want to invest again in this or just stick with what I have. Headed out this June.

Thanks for any insight.

Mark

If you have purchased the our digital data, when you click on the icon you will find exactly the same information we have for that location as is found on the printed maps. Lodging, bike shops, libraries, campgrounds have name, address, phone and other tidbits of information as we know them. Food services such as convenience stores and restaurants show their location when off route or outside of a town. If these are located within a town, they are associated with the town rather than their actual location because we do not have that.

I hope this helps.

Jennifer

I'll be doing the transam, but going west to east.  Good luck and safe travels to you!

I would be interested in this as well, but can't get the link to work (com or org).  Is this an ACA route?  Also, does this merge with the transam?  Will be heading east on the TA and wondering if I can easily jump off to this route.

Thanks for any help.

GPS & Digital Data Discussion / RideWithGPS

New to all this so apologies in advance if these are basic questions.

Planning on Western Express to transam this may.  I have the ACA maps.  Just four,d RWGPS.

This exact route is on RWGPS....is it a viable choice to use both this and the maps?  I'm thinking cell service may not be 100% consistent so maybe maps and the RWGPS app would be good.

I don't have a garmin and really don't want to get one, so would this work with my google maps app?

Thanks in advance for any feedback.

Routes / Western express to transAm
« on: August 07, 2016, 09:00:50 am »
Good morning......

Looking to do the Western express and then connect with the transAm at Pueblo CO (for time reasons I can't do the whole TA).  Looking for any general thoughts or feedback or things to be aware of for this route.

On a related note, I may leave the TA somewhere in the Midwest and go more directly east, rather than angling down to Yorktown.  I live in PA and also have family in NJ so I'm thinking it might be nice to go through those areas too....any thoughts on a more direct Eastern route from the middle of the country are also welcome.

As always, thanks for any thoughts.

I might be indirectly in this category.  Plan is a 2017 transam with efforts to raise funds to endow a scholarship in memory of my mother who had MS.  Honestly I'm not very good nor comfortable asking for donations so I'm still working through my thoughts/plans on this.

Good luck with your search... mark

Gear Talk / Video camera recommendations
« on: April 14, 2016, 04:29:37 pm »
Looking for recommendations on a quality, HD video camera to take with me on a two (ish) month tour. Would like something lightweight, and ideally one that comes with easy editing software.  I'm not super tech-oriented so an easy to use camera would be great.

Thanks for any feedback.

Gear Talk / Wheels without spokes?
« on: April 04, 2016, 03:12:43 pm »
First, a disclaimer: I have next to zero mechanical ability. I am working on learning/improving in this area, but til then....

Last year, last day of Ragbrai, I woke up and realized a spoke came off my rear tire. Didn't have much choice so went the entire day that way and it was fine. As I've come to learn, 1 spoke is maybe not a big deal but 2 or more can cause problems. I had it fixed before I went out again and all was well.

As I'm looking to do a TA next summer (2017), I recognize my weakness and am trying to be proactive on that: To that end, are there wheels (rims?) out there that do not have spokes? I feel like I see these on TV and a search on Amazon suggests maybe this is true as well. But I'm hesitant b/c I'm certainly out of my element.

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

Just wanted to chime in and offer best wishes and perhaps I'll see you at Ragbrai. Looking to do a TA next summer (2017).

Routes / Re: TransAm question

Appreciate everyone's replies so far. I'm a person who likes to study as much as I can in advance so these ideas are great (if it was just me, I'd simply show up and go, but two small kids and work commitments don't lend themselves to that arrangement). It's a tricky thing in that we'd like to do it all but, as one poster noted, there are constraints. I will look into all of the advice provided. Thanks for the feedback.

Routes / TransAm question
« on: April 01, 2016, 09:14:41 am »
Working towards a TransAm in Summer 2016. The route from adventure cycling is about 4300 miles and starts in the upper northwest.  Wondering if there's a a more southern (coastal) starting point that would allow me cut the route mileage down to perhaps 3800/3600 miles total and intersect with the TA trail, perhaps as we enter Wyoming? It's really not about the mileage per se - I'm trying to make the trip manageable in terms of number of days (note that my family is going too and we'll be van camping and would like to do some touring as well).

Apologies in advance if my question is awkwardly worded...just trying to figure this all out.

Thanks in advance for any ideas.

I related to your post and wanted to applaud your ambition.  I'm also teaching and planning now for a 2017 summer transam.  Lots of variables need to fall into place, but that's the goal.  Best of luck to you.
