General Discussion / ACA Donation Requests

Is it my imagination or are members being inundated with donation requests? I don't remember receiving so many emails from ACA past years asking for money!

General Discussion / Re: Updated ACA website and 5 year plan

I agree that ACA needs to do more to recruit new members, but focusing exclusively on the young will not accomplish this. Workshops to get high school and college students interested in bikepacking/touring will not get new members - they will not join ACA (yet). ACA should do more to get the 50+ demographic interested in touring - it is this group that has the time/money to do the Guided Experiences that ACA offers. Maybe workshops targeted to this group, including introductions to gravel riding.

I agree that ACA feels "different" than several years ago. And the migration to the new web server is still not complete: there are old webpages or "Page not found." I inquired about not being able to fiind a map in my account that I had purchased, and they were not able to get it for me. I find ACA's communication with members has gone downhill and like John, have been considering removing ACA from my estate plans.

Have you checked either Project 529 or Bike Index?

https://project529.com/garage

https://bikeindex.org/

Also, consider registering any other bikes you own.

Over two months since "upgrade", it seems like ACA still has not fixed many of the problems associated with the website update. For example, previous orders including GPX purchases have not carried over. Has anybody contacted ACA directly about this to get a timeframe for fixes?

Yes, it seems to be taking ACA awhile to fix their website. Speaking again about the Experiences section, the route maps are back in for each guided tour, but on the main Guided Tours page, the list of 2024 tours grouped by month is still not there. This doesn't seem like it should be a difficult item to fix.

Once, at a c-store, I asked a woman in a car if she could keep an eye on my bike while she waited for somebody in the store. It was really busy, so it took awhile for me to get in and out. I was pleasantly surprised to see the woman (and now her son) still sitting in the car waiting for me to come out. I have also asked the person at the cash register (if it's next to the window) to watch my bike while I dash in to use the restroom.

ACA must still be working on the web site update. The "Experience" sections (ie Guided Tours) are a mess. Main page used to list all of the tours for the season. Right now, none are. Individual sections (Inn to Inn, Fully Supported, etc) are inconsistent-some list the tours, others do not. Also, for each tour, there is no route map and the tour leaders are no longer listed.

I have the Rene Herse Oracle Ridge (700x48) and absolutely love them! I find them great on both pavement and gravel. Highly recommended!

Gear Talk / Re: Trek 920 Disc vs Trek 520 Disc for touring? Help!
« on: May 25, 2017, 12:39:38 pm »
I own a Trek 920 which I love. I used it for a 3 day gravel tour (credit-card touring so not a heavy load) last fall! I haven't done a lot of touring in general though, mainly a lot of gravel rides around my home. A few weeks ago, I swapped out the 2" tires for 700x40 Clement MSO tires which are great.

General Discussion / Re: bike racks for car (trunk style)

Thank your for your suggestions. The top tube adaptor didn't work since the sway cage wouldn't fit between the adaptor and the top tube. Couldn't find an easy way to modify the cradle (that left me confident that it would hold).

I ended up buying the Saris SUPERbones 3 bike trunk rack.

General Discussion / bike racks for car (trunk style)
« on: August 23, 2016, 12:45:00 pm »
I have a Thule bike rack that is about 4 years old which works fine for my road bike. But the cradle won't accomodate the larger top tube of my Trek 920. Do you have suggestions for car bike racks that will accept the larger top tubes that I'm seeing in newer bikes (adventure, mountain, etc)?

Thank you!
