That will make a great touring bike and be low key without a big brand name splashed all over attracting attention. I left my flashy high end bike at home where I wouldn’t worry about leaving it locked up and rode my low key niner. Feel free to call me anytime. I too rode ultralight with a 25lb. bike and I had 4 panniers with all my gear eight pounds apiece for a total of  25lb.  give or take.

The ACA route through St. Louis is on a Main Street which has a large bike lane and was safe to ride. Why route around it ? The ACA route takes you right past the gateway arch - are you going to miss that to route around St. Louis ?  How do you know your route around the city will be safer ?  To be honest there are some sketchy parts of St. Louis outside the downtown area which you may unwittingly ride through. To the best of my knowledge the ACA routes through a city are made with the most bike paths and bike lanes how will your routing around this be safer ? I can see if a local rider gave a specific route that would be better but just avoiding the ACA and making up your own route doesn’t seem wise. That’s just my humble opinion but I do speak from experience - I rode the ACA route and had no problems whatsoever.

I rode this last year in May - traffic wise = comparable to other routes , no better no worse. Traffic between Needles and Ludlow - virtually non existant. As others have stated safety wise the heat , lack of services, and desolation ought to be your main concerns. I will also add that most everyone I encountered had flats due to “tire wires” in the Mohave Desert particularly in California. I ran tubeless tires and had no flats. There was quite a bit of new pavement ( needles to ludlow) but most of that road is terrible - like an alligators skin  - 1” wide and 1” deep cracks literally everywhere. You’ll see what I mean. Good luck with your trip....

Well - for one the schwalbe marathon tubeless I mounted weighed one pound less than the tubed version ( schwalbe marathon supreme)

So- I mounted my tires last week they went on relatively easy I was able to seat the bead on one with a floor pump but the other one need a little encouragement with the air compressor. I deflated, removed the valve cores and injected 2oz. of Stan's sealant. My tire size  700 x 40 weighed 566 grams almost the exact same as the lightweight mountain bike tires I replaced. I've put around 50-60 miles on them so far ( unloaded around town ) They are fast rolling and very plush at 30psi. They are still at 30 psi this week so they aren't losing any air. I haven't had a chance to load up the panniers and take it for a ride yet ( they salted the roads after our recent snowfall ) I'll write some more once I get a chance to ride it loaded.

I have a Garmin Montana 600 with 3 Gb internal memory and a micro sd card - wouldn't the city navigator come on a micro sd card ? I also will use smart phone but thought that since no cell phone / wifi is needed for gps I could see what services were available especially in towns that weren't included in the ACA map ( which I will also have )

Has anyone used City Navigator as a base map on a ACA route ? Can you just " scroll ahead" and see what  hotels campgrounds and restaurants are coming up ?

I went to the larger size sleeping pad for the extra width- on a 20" wide pad my elbows were not on the pad they were on the ground- as a result I was sleeping more on my side less comfortably- even my mummy bag is more comfortable when I'm sleeping on my back. I now sleep more comfortably on my new pad a neo air with the new speed valve  (purchased at an REI garage sale)

Gear Talk / Tent choice for Northern tier

I have a choice to make between my two tents , a eureka backcountry 1 = green ( great for stealth camping) roomy and spacious, freestanding 3 pounds 14 ounces  and my new one , a big Agnes fly creek high volume 1 = bright yellow and silver - definitely not stealthy- roomy enough to sit up and change clothes in but not spacious, not freestanding -a svelte 1 pound 14 ounces.  I am thinking there's not a lot of need for stealth camping on the northern tier and I like to travel fast and light. I don't plan on spending much time (awake anyway) in the tent.  I also have a feeling since I won't be pitching it in beach or desert sand the freestanding won't really come into play.  I plan on taking the Big Agnes - any advice from Northern tier veterans?

I run Stans sealant in my tubeless - mountain bike, road bike, and fat tire bike. I just bought the schwalbe marathon supreme tubeless for my touring bike . I took a leap of faith based on my positive experience with tubeless on my other bikes. I'll post here again once I put some miles on them.

Thank you for sharing that link- I downloaded it onto my computer then onto a micro sd card and inserted it into my Garmin Montana. Works great !!
