Rocky Mountain / Earliest snow in the northern Rockies...

My wife & I are working out the logistics for a cross-country bike trip. We had hoped to go east to west but are not necessarily fixed on that.
Recent life events are causing us to reconsider our original starting date and postpone the start date until a little later in the year. So my direct question is:
Looking at the northwest part of the USA (Oregon, Washington, Idaho & Montana), when does snow typically arrive in those states making it difficult to get across the mountain passes on the Trans America Trail/Lewis and Clark Trail/Northern Tier routes.
We appreciate any input you might have or links to help finding answers.

General Discussion / Bike touring safety... USA...

Hey Team,

I am planning a cross country bike trip in 4 years. I am trying to persuade my wife to join me. She's a bit of a scaredy cat! She is worried about how safe we would be on this venture... not just on the roads but especially at night.
So on a scale of 1 - 10 (Where 10 is: Safety was NEVER a problem. Where 1 is: I couldn't sleep at night I was so worried.)
Based on your travels in the USA, how would you rate safety as an issue?

If you have time to add some details to support your answer, we'd really appreciate the extra information.
