In the end I bought a data SIM card in the UK. I bought it on eBay. It was on the three network advertised as a data sim. It cost me about £30 for 12 gb. It can be used in the USA. I found I had 3G or 4g nearly all the time except in Death Valley and Yosemite. I stuck it in an unlocked iPhone 6. It’s just for data so when I wanted to make calls, I did that with Skype. There were some complications with WhatsApp as that requires a mobile phone number but occasionally I would use my regular sim to pick up texts. Also the recipient of a Skype call might not pick up as the number looks dodgy. Otherwise brilliant. Mobile plans are f*****g expensive in the USA.

Hi.
I'm setting out From Boston at the start of August, hoping to be in San Francisco via Tennessee by end of October....
I want to keep the weight down as much as possible.... I'll be camping a bit..
Do you think I'll have many cold nights on my trip or will I get away with a lightweight sleeping bag not suitable under 10 degrees?...
Cheers
John

You will encounter stiff headwinds, heat, and grit between your teeth in the Southwest.
Santa Ana winds are nothing to sneeze at - especially in the Mojave Desert.
Be prepared.
Have a safe trip.

What route would you suggest to LA once I'm past Memphis?....

Thanks for that.... I guess i just buy one in Walmart on my arrival?.....

My ride is now taking shape... I've booked my flights and have 89 days to to LA from Boston via Nashville..... taking in some places along the way that were significant to Johnny Cash....
I'll be wanting a SIM card for three months with a decent data allowance to keep my blog going and be able to get in contact with warm showers hosts, google maps etc.....
Any recommendations for a SIM deal for Johnny Foreigner visiting the USA please?...

General Discussion / USA immigration
« on: December 31, 2017, 11:47:31 am »
Hello from Wales in the U.K...
I have now decided to bicycle across the USA...... Boston to Los Angeles..... starting Beginning of August....

I've just gone to book my outbound aeroplane ticket from The U.K. To Boston to be told US immigration will need to see an onward ticket before allowing me in....

Because I don't know how long the journey will take me (no more than three months), I wasn't planning to book my return ticket until I was near LA....

Does anyone know if there's a loophole for overland travellers or is this just a sign of the times and I should buy a return ticket for 3 months later?.....

Thanks , John.

Thanks for those helpful replies.....
I can't really get over there earlier. Too many commitments at home.
I've looked at those weather sites and I now agree with the starting East, riding west....
No early morning sun in your eyes either.....

Hello, I'm John from Wales, UK.
I have decided to ride coast to coast USA later in 2018.
The route I'm considering will start in Los Angeles and finish in Rhode Island where a friend lives.
Because I'm a bit of a Johnny Cash fan, I'd like to visit Memphis and Nashville on the way so I figure LA would be a good starting point.... my wife has given me three months leave to do the trip.
I'm thinking of starting at the beginning of August....
I'd be on a budget and camping, couchsurfing and warm showering it as much as possible...
Does this route sound logical or would the weather in August in Arizona and New Mexico just be too hot to cycle in? I'll be bringing my bike over from the UK.
I'd be grateful for any Comments or ideas on this please...
Thankyou
John
