Hi, I’ve just joined so apologies if it’s in the wrong section

I have a friend who wants to ship their bicycle from California to Philadelphia , I think it’s a city bike.

Not sure if they can dismantle it so what are the cheapest/best services for both ?

I’m from the UK so I’m not familiar with US postal services.

Thanks

BikeFlights is likely your best option. Doing a quick price quote using a 56x10x32" box weighing 40 pounds from LA (90001) to Philadelphia (19149)
FedEx: $80.77 - 4 days
BikeFlights: $59.95 - 5 days

Keep in mind that BikeFlights has several advantages.... They price match any equivalent shipment so if you find a cheaper shipping option they'll refund the difference to you. They also guarantee delivery. If your bike isn't delivered on the date it's scheduled to be delivered BikeFlights will pay you $100 per business day (up to 5 days) until it's delivered.

You can see all of their guarantees here: https://www.bikeflights.com/guarantee
Thanks a lot

Size matters in shipping costs, so some level of dismantling will save money, possibly a lot of money. Figure out what the dimensions and weight will be before looking at costs. And determine the zip code of the origin and destination. Then figure out if you need insurance and how much. Only when you have figured these things out are you ready to go look for a shipper.

FedEx and UPS have online shipping calculators, so you can see what it will cost. The US Postal Service is usually not a feasible way to ship a bike —they probably won’t take anything that large at any cost.

Check out the shipping services of bus and train lines too. E.g., Greyhound and Amtrak.

Most surprising of all are the shipping resellers. bikeflights.com and shipbikes.com are usually cheaper than FedEx, even though they use FedEx to transport the bike.

Thanks for all the info. I think they decided to go with FedEx and are able to dismantle the bike. Do you happen to know price difference between going direct through them direct or through  Bikeflights ?
I know there are variable but how much do you think it would be?
Thanks again

Bikeflights will almost certainly be less expensive that going through FedEx. Once your friend has a box size and estimated weight (size is more of a price driver than weight) she can get on line quotes from both services.
Thank you
