General Discussion / Re: Recommendations for a tour beginning in Chicago
« on: February 27, 2017, 11:53:31 pm »
There are two great tours that you can start in Chicago. One is a trour around Lake Michigan which can easily be split in two segments somewhere on the Michigan side. You can travel by car and/or take the ferry to get  from/to the midway point. The other tour is the Grand Illinois Trail, which can be done in one section within your time frame. You can stretch it out further, by adding in a part of the Mississippi River Trail.

Have a great ride,
Reinout

REI only carries the top-of-the-line OR's on-line. The had me try-out a lot lower cost REI brand mitten but it wasn't warm enough. They said to order the OR's with store delivery, try them and I could retun for full refund anytime, without any questions. Sounded like a real liberal return policy. I may try that out

I use Lake winter boots that are about a 1/2 size too large. I wear wool socks and most importantly I have room for the heating pouches. And here is the trick. After a ride, I stick the warmers in a ziploc bag, squeeze out the air and roll them up tight. The chemicals stop producing heat and will restart when taken out and shaken a little bit. This way I can use the 8 or 10 hours warmers about 3 days on a 1 hour one-way commute.

I have looked at the handle bar mitts. I would need at least two sets for the different bikes I use. Also, my hands need very very much protection as well as the hand warmer pouches. My finger tips start to turn white and numb at about 40 degr. I haven't bought anything yet, but I am leaning towards the AltiMits, if I can try them on at REI over the weekend.

Gear Talk / Mitts or Gloves for extreme cold

What are the best mitts or gloves for extreme cold weather, down to single digits if not Zero, in Chicago.
I have read about the Outdor Research Alti Mitts. Any experiences or other recommendations?

Thanks, Reinout
