Send me an email with your mailing address and we'll send you a bicycle touring map for Nevada.  It may provide additionally valuable information for Nevada's portion of the Western Express.  Sounds like a great trip.

It could be pretty chilly in May, although right now we are experiencing quite a warm spell across northern Nevada (highs in the upper 40s to 50s and sometimes the 60s).  Feel free to contact us if you have specific questions about your route through Nevada.  We'd be happy to send you our Bicycle Touring Map which has information on the traffic volumes, shoulder widths, etc..  Also our Division of State Parks has also instituted a formal "no turn away from campgrounds" policy for touring bicyclists.  Even on the 4th of July with campgrounds full they will always find you a spot.

72 miles to be exact.  The Tahoe Bicycle Coalition has free bike maps available (http://tahoebike.org/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=70&Itemid=1 ).  You can contact me and I can send you one or they should be available a bike shops and rental locations around the lake.  You may encounter numerous construction projects around the lake throughout the summer season.

Routes / Re: cross-country WITHOUT ACA Maps
« on: March 24, 2010, 06:42:19 pm »
Each state Dept. of Transportation has a designated Bicycle and Pedestrian Coordinator (see http://www.walkinginfo.org/assistance/contacts.cfm).  Most of the states produce a bicycle map with more information pertinent to cyclists than standard road maps.  Many states also have corridor guides for bicyclists as well (e.g, CA, etc.).  All these items should be free.  The coordinators should be able to give you additional valuable information on proposed routes and construction.  Just contact your state coordinator.

If you need info on Nevada, please contact me.

We have free cycling maps available showing the US 50 route.  It also outlines water, services, vehicle traffic, truck traffic, shoulder width, etc..  Weather should be good in June but late storms are always a possibility.

February and March across the Sierra Nevada Mountains and the Great Basin would be very cold that time of year.  Highway routes are frequently closed that time of year.  I can give you more specific information on cycling across Nevada.  Just contact me at bicycle@dot.state.nv.us.

General Discussion / Re: "Support vehicle"
« on: June 08, 2009, 07:47:59 pm »
Be aware that a vehicle following a bicycle, at the bicycles low rate of speed, or as most call it, a "Pace vehicle" requires a permit from most state Transportation Departments.  Any deviation of normal traffic patterns or the use of the right-of-way for other purposes (rest stops, etc.) would usually trigger this.  The "leap frogging' of support vehicles is a preferred method that does not require permits.
