Routes / Re: California Campgrounds open?

It can be pretty desolate in places, I was going to hide off the road in the woods if I couldn't find a campground, luckily I never had a problem. I did the Arcata to SF section and I didn't find the climbs too bad at all. Leggett to Hwy 1 was the biggest sustained climb I believe but not too bad if you make that a shorter day.

Routes / Munich Germany to Vienna Austria
« on: May 12, 2021, 03:50:44 pm »
I am looking at a bike tour of southern Germany to Vienna. Starting in Munich I would love to ride down to see Neuschwanstein Castle, then on to Innsbruck, Salzburg and ending in Vienna. Looks like there is a Eurovelo cycle route from Salzburg all the way to Vienna, but what about from Munich to Innsbruck and the side trip to Neuschwanstein? I'm okay with riding on roads with traffic but obviously want to limit that if possible.

I did the CA coast last October and even though some campground were officially closed (from Covid and the raging wildfires), I was able to stay at all my planned places as a biker. One closed campground I was the only one there except for the host, the camp host said I could stay and didn't even have to pay - still had a shower to!

Gear Talk / Re: Touring bike for 80% pavement, 20% gravel/dirt

Thanks everyone. Although this is all a moot point right now because there are zero bikes available at the moment..... my biggest factors in choosing a bike are 1) how much it weighs (30 lbs... no thanks), and having a granny gear to make it up into the mountains. Oh...and it's actually available!

Gear Talk / Touring bike for 80% pavement, 20% gravel/dirt

I am looking to upgrade my touring bike from an entry level road bike to something a bit better suited to touring. I plan on spending most of the time on pavement, but I want to be able to do gravel/dirt roads or well worn double track. I'm looking for suggestions in the $1 - $2k range.
