Gear Talk / Re: Tubeless Tires
« on: August 16, 2024, 05:20:02 pm »
And I've had good luck with Surly Extraterrestrial. I run 650Bx46 on a widish rim. The site shows they are available in 700X41 with a recommended rim width of 23 – 30mm. Your post notes you are looking for up to 35, but not sure if that is preference or max of your bike.
Good luck!

Are you looking for rims (plan to build wheel set) or wheels? I've been doing some research to build a set of my own wheels and found a few options that look promising. I'll note that these support wider tires (>40) and at least 32 spokes that I am interested in.

This was recommended by a (adventure) bike builder when I asked the same question.

From what I've read these would work.

This one came up because I've seen them used on a gravel bike being used for touring.

Hope this helps.

This leg of the trip I'm coming up from DC. I missed the connection to the Chicago-NYC route from AC until you mentioned it, so that now looks like a great option from Conshohocken.
Thanks!!!

Thanks for the suggestion. I'll take a look at RWGPS to see if I can make it work. The suggested travel day (not a surprise) may be the problem since this will be towards the end of a multi-week tour.

Connecting ACA Routes / Atlantic Coast to Empire State Trail in NYC
« on: December 07, 2023, 07:24:39 pm »
It's not an ACA route, but I'm looking for suggestions on getting from the Atlantic Coast route to the southern point of the Empire State Trail in lower Manhattan (Battery Point). I know I could take the New York Spur, then likely an NJT train in, but wondering if there is another alternative route.
Any suggestions (even - are you crazy!) would be appreciated.
Thanks

Thanks for the response and pointer to the other discussion. I'll take a look at the other route as I begin the more detailed (and enjoyable!) planning phase.
Thanks again

Routes / Re: Pittsburgh to Buffalo route

I am off on a ride along the C and O canal and GAP trail later this month and am undecided about what to do when I get to Pittsburgh, one option is to carry on to Buffalo then along the Erie Canal to Albany and was wondering if there is a bicycle friendly route between the two cities? I have found the Erie Pittsburgh Trail website but it seems to be several disconnected lengths of trail that are still under development, would this be a good route to follow and fill in the gaps myself? All advice gratefully received.

I'm planning a similar (but in reverse direction) route next year. If you rode between Pittsburgh and Buffalo, did you use the UGRR Pittsburgh Spur or something else?
Thanks!

John, thanks for the advice on the wheel set. That is something I am looking into.

Gear Talk / Using a gravel bike for C2C ride - what am I missing?
« on: December 11, 2021, 08:22:36 am »
I've spent some time going through old posts on the subject but haven't found anything that puts the nail in the coffin, so I wanted to ask for some specific guidance/feedback.

I'm finally in a position to begin touring with the goal of doing a C2C ride in 2025. Leading up to that I'll be doing several shorter (7ish day) loaded rides. Several years ago I purchased a Moots gravel bike - I'm sure there are a lot of opinions on that, but for me it is the best bike (yeah, most expensive too) that I've owned. I'd like to use it for my touring plans, and have thought about the following -
- have  a 20" low gear
- consider a more durable wheel set
- purchase a trailer (another topic with many opinions)

So, what am I missing? I'm not against buying a touring bike, but if this setup can work I'd like to use it.
