I haven't been on a tour for six years but will be heading in September. I had a heart attack about four years ago which forced me to set up a serious cardio/workOut routine. I'm fairly fit now and have more muscle than I probably did four years ago which really helps.  I think the one thing that helps is to lower your expectations, maybe you cant do 60 miles a day but you can do 30 and that's OK.  Also, if you can find a program/diet that can help you build muscle I think that makes a big difference, I've seen a lot of older people have problems simply because they didn't have strength to keep their biking moving with momentum.  If I couldn't keep my bike moving at a good enough pace I wouldn't go because proper cycling requires momentum which requires strength and if I didn't have that I wouldn't fool myself, that's when accidents happen, I've seen it on the Oregon Coast.

Best to leave your car in astoria at the tourist info building which I think is the same building as the Chamber of Commerce and then just find a way back up from Crescent city. I've done the trip twice once I cut across the mountains from Florence to Eugene  which was a hard trip in itself and then took the Amtrak up to Kelso/Longview and then rode back over to Astoria and picked up my vehical. The second time I had somebody come down to pick me up in Crescent city. Next time I do it I'll just find a way to get back up to Astoria, bus/ship and my bike back home to Canada.  You could Rent-A-Car and drive to Portland or Eugene and get the Amtrak that way. This is always a problem, good luck

When I did the Oregon Coast 2 years ago I started in Longview, I dedcided to forego the bridge because there was too much junk laying on the road and to many trucks, I headed up the river on the Washington side and took a ferry across at Cathmat. Besides, if your heading to the coast you avoid the big long climb on the otherside of the bridge.

I did a self -contained tour on a Cannondale Road Bike and never again. I had to replace both wheels because of flat spots after hitting a pothole and the bike just couln't handle the weight of full panniers/sleeping bag & pad plus all the little extras. I'm in the process of buying a touring bike with a steel frame.
