We veered Northeast at Sterling CO towards Julesburg and then into Nebraska towards Ogallala.

The difficult conditions were off the main EE on our detoured portion. We followed a route thru the Sandhills recommended by another member of this forum to Columbus NE and then made our way from there to Omaha. I must say that the people in Nebraska were great and incredibly nice. Otherwise, I wouldn’t much recommend riding there.
We chose to go this way because I had heard the Kansas portion of the EE was on a busy state Hwy and some folks didn’t enjoy that either.

Routes / Midwest Variants for Eastern Express
« on: October 13, 2023, 09:38:58 am »
We are riding the Eastern Express and detoured thru the Sandhills region of Nebraska and into Omaha. Planning to rejoin the Eastern Express in Atchison KS via the Lewis and Clark Route. We found cycling in Nebraska to be very challenging. The roads are not cycling friendly and we encountered multiple road closures, bridges out, and closed businesses that are not accurately reflected on Google.

We have been riding the TransAm in sections due to work/time constraints.  We also wanted to include Pittsburgh in our route because my partner is from there and I did some of my medical training there.  Additionally,  we favor paths away from traffic so the Eastern Express is a nice alternative East of Walden, CO.  So this year, after riding from Dillon, MT Eastward on the Classic TA, we veered off at Walden, CO and picked up the Eastern Express to Fort Collins.  Next year we will pick up there to continue Eastward.  The section from Walden to Fort Collins was great.  We climbed the Cameron Pass over the Rockies which was wonderful.  There's a small well stocked grocery store in Gould right before the main climb.  The descent along the Poudre River for approximately 60 miles was beautiful, with many nice campgrounds and resorts to stay at along the way.  The Poudre River bike path into Fort Collins was also a welcome respite from traffic.  Would highly recommend visiting the Me Oh My Pie along the 287B for homemade pie and excellent lunch options.  Fort Collins is a happening town with many great restaurants and services.
The TA section riding through Yellowstone and Grand Teton was the highlight of the trip for us.  Yes there was traffic, but we started very early in the morning and thoroughly enjoyed the experience.  Wouldn't have missed it for anything!

I haven't had a lot of luck with Google search or RidewithGPS finding this cross country route through the covered bridges area.  The postings are all for short loop rides.  Has anyone ridden this area as part of a cross country trip and could share a route?
Thanks
Lynn

Yes we will definitely keep you posted.  We are doing the trip in sections year by year since we can only take 3 weeks off work at a time.
This year, we resume in Dillon, MT and will veer off the traditional TransAm route in Walden, CO, ending in Fort Collins.  Next year we're planning to modify the Eastern Express route from Fort Collins to Platte City, KS.
I am traveling with my partner Stephanie, but we often ride at different paces.  I enjoy the peace and quiet of cycling alone, but knowing she's not far behind is comforting. I agree with the comment about the "mind cleanse."  Well said.

Thanks so much for these suggestions.  Yes we want to return to the Eastern Express to ride the Katy Trail across Missouri.  Any thoughts about a nice route South to the Katy Trail?
We are also looking to modify the Eastern Express route across Indiana to include the "Covered Bridges" route I have read folks posting about.  Trying to get some links to that area as well.
Ultimately we need to make our way to Pittsburgh, which was the original reason we modified the traditional TransAm route to begin with.

We are riding the Eastern Express route from Walden, CO east.  Does anyone have a route link that detours through the Sandhills of Nebraska from the standard Eastern Express route?
Many thanks.

Hi John,
Do you have a link for the Indiana Bridges route between St. Louis and Indianapolis.
Thanks in advance.
