General Discussion / Re: Have any of you gotten sick on tour?
« on: June 23, 2010, 02:09:17 am »
I've only gone on one long distance ride and I too found myself under the weather.  I attributed it to not eating right and over working myself.  I just got a hotel and a big meal and took the day to recuperate.  I felt much better the next day.

There's three routes I know of to get from Oregon to Orange County.  One is the ACA route which I believe follows PCH for the most part.  The other two are ones I found on google maps when I used the bicycle route search.  One takes the Oc&E Woods Line State Trail and the other takes the US-395 S.

The other two look like they go through less mountains, which is appealing to me but I'm not familiar with these routes.  Has anyone taken them or know of them?  Are there many camp sites around these routes?  What's the terrain like?  If anyone has any input I'd be happy to hear it.

That is awesome advice!  Thanks a lot!

And no, I'm not leaving in 3 weeks.  I'm gonna do it in june-ish when it heats up a bit more.  I plan for the trip to last 3 weeks.

General Discussion / Oregon to Los Angeles and Gear Questions
« on: November 23, 2009, 09:30:41 am »
I recently rode my bike to San Diego from Orange County and was now wanting to step it up a notch.  On my last ride I was ill-equipped and ill-prepared (150 dollar bike from Target, wore a backpack-ouch, didn't bring enough money)  But I made it!  Not wanting to repeat mistakes of the past, I have come up with a few questions.

I obviously need a new bike to replace my 150 dollar one.  I'm assuming I have to spend between 500 to 1000 bucks.  And I heard you need to be sized for them.  Does anyone have recommendations on types of bikes?  Also as far as panniers vs. trailers, which do you recommend for a long ride.  And on my last ride I just rode in shorts and a t-shirt.  Do biker shorts really make a difference or are they even necessary?  For camping does anyone have any light weight suggestions?

Lastly and probably most importantly, is Oregon to Los Angeles perhaps too much?  Is there anything I should take into consideration?  I plan on doing it in three weeks.

Oh, and also, where can I get one of those ACA maps?

General Discussion / California to Arizona? First time rider
« on: August 09, 2009, 09:39:34 am »
Hey, I'm 24 and in Orange County, Ca and I wanted to plan my first bike ride.  I've been wanting to take a long ride for a while and I feel this is something I have to do.  Ideally I'd like to ride to Arizona.  I have about 8-10 days off and I was wondering if it was even possible to do it in that amount of time, and if so what route can I take or how can I find a route.  I'm also open to any suggestions to other routes that would fall in the same time frame.   I'm planning on leaving in about a week and will welcome any company.  Thanks a lot!
