Gear Talk / Tire recommendation for supported tour

     We've used Marathon Plus for fully loaded touring in the past. We're now in our 60's and going to do our first supported tour and hand pain is an issue on long days. We are on Salsa Fargo's - steel. A few ounces won't make much difference and we'll be going Inn to Inn in Vermont so I'd prefer to have a softer tire for my wife, but she admittedly doesn't care to flat. Who does? I'm considering Big Apple tires. It's going to be pure road riding and minimal mileage. It's just a week or two of riding and I'm willing to get tires specifically for the tour so longevity is unimportant. Comfort first with some eye to flat resistance in deference to my wife but we've certainly fixed our share of flats so I don't want or need the harsher ride of Marathon Plus tires for super flat protection. Thoughts?

   In the event somebody checks this thread out in the future I would make the general comment that you should check carefully for road work. On any given summer a lot of road construction has to be compressed into the short work season so many highways in AK and Canada have sections torn up in summer. Wherever you might plan to tour up here, check out road construction in your proposed area.

General Discussion / studs are meaningless

  Studded tires don't help in snow. They do help on ice. Good mtn bike tires are all that's necessary for most snow, but if your ride takes you over icy areas then studs are indeed a hugh help. For anyone commuting or riding on pavement in Winter, studs are the way to go. If you drive to an off-road trail and ride on the snow with no icy patches (it does happen), then studs are of no real benefit.

General Discussion / Rent tour bike in Pennsylvania ?

   My wife and I will be traveling to Penn in April. We are going for an unrelated activity and might wish to take the time to do a week bike ride, but won't be able to deal with shipping our bikes. Is there anyplace where we might rent a pair of touring bikes and panniers or perhaps mtn bikes and a single track towing setup? We don't need to rent Bruce Gordon bikes but neither do we want junkers. We are 60 yrs old and definitely want triples/touring or mtn bikes. She needs a pretty small frame. Any recommendation on bike shops with decent bikes to rent for a week. We could probably travel to anywhere in PA to get them, then do something like an Allegheny ride for a few days.
