Thanks Mike & Bri for the last two posts.

I think I'll probably end up getting a one way car hire from Dulles to Yorktown, sounds a bit lazy but I want to get on the Trans Am route asap and don't really want to have to back track the Richmond section.

Thanks for everyone's input, very helpful.

Routes / Katy Trail and Trans Am
« on: April 02, 2010, 12:25:03 pm »
Someone advised me that a diversion off of the Trans Am route onto the Katy Trail is a good thing to do.

Have other people done this, how does it compare to the section of Trans Am that you'll miss and what mileage will be added by connecting up to this route?

I'm tinkering on Google Earth to try and answer my own questions, but any first hand knowledge is always a bonus.

Cheers

Routes / Re: Earliest date set off on Trans American Route

Hi Ellie

Hows your nephew doing on his ride. I'm starting the Trans Am in mid May so hopefully the weather won't be so extreme.

I'm still not 100% sure on how to get to Yorktown for the start; some kind folk on the Connecting ACA Routes forum have given me some tips. I bet the taxi from Richmond wasn't cheap!!

I'll be flying into DC from the UK and raising money for Shelterbox.

If he has any nuggets of knowledge for me that would be great!

Cheers

Thanks for that tip Bob, I'll contact Virgin Atlantic and see what they have to say.

Bob, John,

Thanks for the advice, very useful, it does seem quite tricky to get to the start at Yorktown. It's bad enough getting from my home in Devon UK to London Heathrow!

I just went over the bridge you mentioned Bob using Google street view, they certainly don,t cater for cyclist or pedestrians!

I think the connecting flight might be the best option, It just depends how much they try to sting me for me and a bike.

More research I think!

Thanks again.

Connecting ACA Routes / Dulles Airport to Yorktown to start Trans am
« on: March 26, 2010, 12:17:07 pm »
I will be flying into Dulles Airport from the UK sometime in early May 2010 to do the Trans Am.

What are my options for getting from the Airport to Yorktown, either by bike or using public transport?

Can I actually ride from the airport itself, or is this only served by larger roads?

In reality I will probably need to get my bike and bags to a motel near the start of my connecting route and sleep off my jet lag and rebuild my bike!

If I decide to cycle to the start, it looks like the Tidewater Potomac route or part of the Atlantic Coast route might be the best options. Which is the more scenic with the best opportunities for camping?

Any advice gratefully received; but until then I will carry on scouring the net to see what I can find.

Cheers

Stuart

Routes / East West Route starting in May
« on: March 14, 2010, 01:37:41 pm »
Up until a month ago I was leaving the UK to cycle east through Europe and Asia. I've now had a change of plan and have decided to take on the world in the other direction!!!

Partly because I've toured in Europe before and have never travelled in the US and I also want to catch up with a friend in Vancouver.

I now find myself scouring the net for advice on the best routes from east to west, starting in early May.

I'd probably fly in to Boston or Washington DC.

The Northern Tier via the Erie Connector and North Lakes looks nice, as does heading down to join the Lewis and Clark and linking in to the last section of the Northern Tier.

I will go and have a good trawl through this forum, but if anyone has got any top tips and definate no no's to help me get my plans together quickly I'd be grateful.

Cheers
