Gear Talk / Buying a New Trek 520
« on: November 03, 2006, 11:00:06 am »
Enjoy your new Trek, it's a great touring bike. As for gearing you should also change the 52 chain ring to a 48 and the middle to a 36 and it's my understanding that a 22 will not fit unless you change the whole chain ring setup. Also keep an eye on the rims for spider cracks around the spoke holes after 2 or 3000 miles.
  Enjoy, Fred

Gear Talk / Trek 520 rim cracks -no warranty service
« on: October 23, 2006, 01:03:23 pm »
I have a trek 520 which I bought in 2001 and in 2004 I was told by the bike shop that my rear rim and spider cracks around the spoke holes and that a new rim was not covered under warranty. At that point I had not started solo touring so had never carried any weight on rear except a small pannier but love my 520 a great touring bike after you do the upgrades for touring.

Planning my 09 No. Tier ride. How many miles is it from the east side at the beginning of the restricted rd. to the end of the restriction on the west side and approx. how many hrs. on a loaded bike? Article mentions Apgar turnoff to south end of Lake McDonald. also mentions from west ent. Logan Creek to Logan Pass.
Thanks for your help. Fred Lonas

Before I order my maps for my 2009 Northern Tier ride I have a few questions. Im going as far as Cut Bank, Montana but I'm not sure whether I'll go thru Glacier Nat. Park or take Rt 2 around to Whitefish or Kalispell. From there which is the better rt to Missoula rt 83 to 200 or rt 93 straight in to Missoula. any help is appreciated.
Thanks, Fred Lonas

Need to know before I buy the maps.
Thanks for your help.

General Discussion / Addirondack Loop

I think you were asking about parking for the Addirondack loop which is a little NW of Albany. Same directions applies. Parking in Burlington Vermont is out of way.

General Discussion / Transam rt or Northern tier ?
« on: September 26, 2007, 02:54:48 pm »
Hello again, it's Fred Lonas, and I have decided to do the Northier Tier rt. in 09 at 69 yr's of age before I reach my senior year's.
I'll be leaving my home in No. Va. and follow the C&O Canal and the Allengheny Passage trail to Pittsburg then pickup the new rt that AC is putting together, I think it's the Western rt. at Pa. DOT. has on it's web site and as Paul did follow sec. 1,2, and 3 of No. Lakes rt. and maybe the Erie Lake rt. I'm starting to gather info., ideas or suggestion now but will wait untill 08 to get maps. I want to go through Missoula, Mt. and pick up the L&C rt. and follow the Columbia River to Portland and then to Astoria Or.
The excitment level is running high so planning now keeps it under control. I've started a file so bring on the suggestions. I will be going solo or maybe one other person, we'll see.
Thanks for your help.
Fred
