I have a trek 1000, thinking about buying my first touring bike and I want to buy the right size. I see the Surly for instance has about 6 sizes. When I bought my Trek 1000 I was new to biking and not sure if it is even the right size. Even though I ride between 2500 and 3500 miles a season, my upper body, (shoulders, neck, upper arms) ache quite often. So I am not sure I even have the proper size road bike. I would like to start taking some tours and need to know the right size so that I can cycle for days without the upper body aches.

cyclebum, yes clip in or not. Thanks so much for the advice, those two little suggestions helped a lot. Wish i could do a real tour like yours, guess i have to start somewhere. Thanks again.

Trying to plan my first tour, is it advisable to wear shoes that clip in or not while on the road. I have a Trek 1000 what is the minimum size tire i should have for a short tour. Any advice is appreciated.

Good for you, keep going. I started biking at 50 now 56. Its just as hard to find someone to bike with in my little corner of the world. Port Huron, MI.
I try to get to Fla as much as possible, but jobs make that hard. Belong to a great club down there in North Port. Would love to meet some folks my age or at least close who also would possibly like to go on what would be my first tour some day. Male and/or female. Any way Happy riding.

Have done some riding in the Fairview, Mio area. M-33 is not to bad from Mio to Rose city, most of the road has been redone in recent years and the shoulders were made wider in a lot of areas. Some hills, but pretty country. Live in Port Huron if your coming that way.

Gear Talk / Busted spokes.

As a matter of fact, the winter was hard on my weight, and it was this spring that i busted the four spokes in Florida. However i have rode about 26 every other day for the last 3 weeks in Michigan, and so far no bad spokes. I didn't realize you could get even more spokes on a wheel. Thanks for the suggestion.

Thanks, I was taking a guess that it might be something along those lines. I suppose it is still cheaper to get it rebuilt than to buy a new rear wheel. Thanks again.

I ride a Trek 1000, approx. 4 years old. I have one that I ride in Michigan,  and one that I ride in Florida in the spring. Bought both at the same time. The Trek in Florida, has had 4 broken spokes (at different times), the Trek in Michigan has had none. Any reason a different climate would cause problems with spokes? Or is this just a coincedence.

Thanks Tom, is the eazy seat also for a road bike. I have heard recumbents are hard on hills. I suppose that would be good in Florida, not to many hills. Thanks.

I have not tried adjusting the seat up or down or any other way. I have thought about a seat with less padding, although mine does not have a lot of padding now. I dont have any problem with chaffing of any kind, use the chamois butter. Just " the butt bone feels like it is bruised" for lack of a better description. Would my weight have much to do with it. In Michigan I dont get much biking in the winter, and usually put on some weight. Have also had three broken spokes all of sudden this spring while biking in Florida. Anyway thank you all for the suggestions. I will try them all. Not quite ready for a recummbent though.

Thanks for your reply, yes on the bike shorts, no on underwear. I don't have any problem with chaffing. I was tempted to try a  seat with less padding. My only other guess would be to get my weight down some more. I just have what i call that end of the ride soreness. I feel as if my legs and body could do 50, 60 or even a century. But Im not sure my butt could take it. And I see pros and other people riding with seats that have almost no padding. I have some padding on a leather seat. Thanks for all your replys.

Last year I put in about 3000 miles. But not mort than 43 at a time. I never get to a point where my rear end is comfortable enough to ride farther, like a century. Any advice would be appreciated.
